The Chess Team for all Lawrencians. From Ashes to Immortality, we rose from the ashes of Quantrill's raid, and like the phoenix that flew from the ruins of the Eldridge, we rebuilt and grew the greatest civilization known to man: Lawrence. Since 1854 we have been in a glorious battle with Missouri for freedom and democracy. Missouri, or as it is known in Lawrence, "misery," lost the civil war, and the abolitionists in Lawrence won. It was pro-slavery Missourians who raided Lawrence in 1863, but the indomitable will of our people has been beating them back since.
