Today we celebrate the birth of Paul Morphy, the American chess prodigy born in 1837. 🎉

♟️ Morphy dominated the chess world from 1857-1859, showcasing his exceptional talent and understanding of the game. He is considered the first modern player with an excellent grasp of development and dynamics. Despite retiring at the young age of 22 to pursue a career in law, his impact on the game is still felt today.

🗣️ Jose R. Capablanca once said, "The magnificent American master had the most extraordinary brain that anybody has ever had for chess. Technique, strategy, tactics, knowledge which is inconceivable for us; all that was possessed by Morphy fifty-four years ago." Bobby Fischer also praised Morphy, stating, "Morphy was probably the greatest genius of them all." Let us remember and celebrate the life and achievements of Paul Morphy on this day.

He passed away in 1884 at the age of 47, but his legacy lives on.

I am glad that Morphy gave us such excellent chess games. But its also important to know more about him than just his chess career. I highly recommend reading his biography. He was a very troubled man. Not sure whether his other behavior was caused by his time spent on chess.
