Welcome to the Charter Oak Chess Club!

My name is Matthew Shirvell and I have been teaching chess full time for the past 6 years. Before starting my own club, I worked at Team DIG USA where I won 2020 Coach of the Year, the Chess Club of Fairfield County as the Club Manager, and the Milford Chess Academy as a tournament director and coach. I currently work as a full time chess coach here in Brooklyn, NY.

I teach players of all ages and rating ranges up to USCF 1600 (Chess.com 1800) I am a big believer in Study Plans which is why each of my students receives one on their first day. When we finish one goal, we write a new study plan focusing on a different area of the game. This focused approach has helped me turn beginners into State Champions!
