Short Wins 2012 Edmonton International
The 7th Edmonton International Chess Festival took place from 27 June - 2 July in Alberta, Canada.
The competition was a 10-player single round robin using the 3-1-0 scoring system. The profile of the event was raised considerably by the participation of Nigel Short who was the strongest player by some distance.
However the English GM didn't have it all his own way, starting with a shock loss in the first round to Israeli GM Victor Mikhalevski, rated nearly 200 points lower. Despite this setback Short went on to claim first place as expected, only giving up draws to GM Anton Kovalyov and IM Irina Krush.
The time control was 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to a finish with a 30 second increment from the start.
