Matt Huang Wins CryptoChamps
CryptoChamps powered by Coinbase was a smashing success, bringing together some of the crypto community heavyweights for a weekend of chess battles. Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang defeated Surojit Chatterjee in the finals to win the event.
On his way to the final, Huang had to defeat Robert Leshner and Benjamin Cowen. His personal friend, Surojit Chatterjee, was the last obstacle standing in Huang's way to the title. With his victory, Huang earned $5,000, which he donated to the Bitcoin Development Fund of the Human Rights Foundation.
Chatterjee, who took second place, donated his $3,000 to Pratham USA's COVID Relief Fund for India.
Huang, who thought he had no chance of winning the event, was surprised and happy with the outcome. "A lot of people worry about crypto volatility, what happens if it all comes crashing down... Maybe I can have a backup career here," he joked.
The Consolation Bracket was also full of action and excitement, with Ben Forman winning a tight match against Kain Warwick. Both players surprised the hosts with their technique, which was seemingly way above their rating level.
"This is probably the highlight of my chess career," Ben Forman said in his post-match interview. "I'm grateful to be able to participate; it was a lot of fun, and thanks to Chess.com for putting on the event," he concluded.
Another highlight of the event came from Compound's founder and CEO, Robert Leshner. Inspired by his victory over Anthony "Pomp" Pompliano, Leshner donated $50,000 to charity.
