July 2012 FIDE Rating List

FIDE have published the official July 2012 chess rating list and Magnus Carlsen has maintained his #1 position, gaining 2 points to stand at 2837 Elo thanks to his victory at the Tal Memorial.

Lev Aronian's poor performance at the same event contributed to his rating loss of 9 points, falling to 2816 Elo but holding on to the #2 ranking.

Vladimir Kramnik's on-off status as a 2800+ player was off again as he slipped to 2799 Elo at #3 on the list.

Teimour Radjabov is the new #4 ranked player, gaining 4 precious Elo points to overhaul world champion Vishy Anand who lost 11 rating points during his world title defence against Boris Gelfand, and now stands at #5.  The rest of the top 10 remained the same.

Judit Polgar played no rated games during the two-month period, keeping her #1 ranking on the women's list at 2709 Elo.  The gap to the #2 player increased as Hou Yifan's relatively poor form cost her 6 points, dropping her to 2617 Elo.

Anna Muzychuk at #3 closed the gap to Hou Yifan thanks to her shared victory in the Kazan Grand Prix, which increased her rating 8 points to 2606 Elo.

Fabiano Caruana reinforced his status as clearly the best junior player in the world after coming close to winning the Tal Memorial and keeping his #8 ranking on the full list at 2775 Elo.

The July 2012 rating list is also the first to contain separate rapid and blitz ratings where players have played enough of the those games so far this year.  No separate ranking lists seem to be available yet, but if individual players have been assigned rapid and/or blitz ratings they appear on their profile at the FIDE ratings website. e.g Anna Muzychuk's profile here.

In future, FIDE will publish the official rating lists on a monthly basis.
