phpQP9l8p.jpegFrench hearts were broken in the penultimate round of the Alekhine Memorial in St.Petersburg when co-leader Maxime Vachier-Lagrave unexpectedly lost to Nikita Vitiugov.

Nikita Vitiugov had drawn all his games since a painful first round loss to Vladimir Kramnik, so he now has an even score again.

The beneficiary of Vachier-Lagrave's first loss is Boris Gelfand who managed to hold Vladimir Kramnik to a draw in a long game despite looking to be in real trouble. Gelfand now leads alone with 5/8 points.

All the other games in round eight ended as draws.
