News Release - For Immediate Release- contact- Stan Vaughan email- [email protected] Grandmaster Larry Evans to be commentator of key games for spectators @ 2007 American Chess Association US Open Chess Championship @ Oasis Resort Casino American Chess Grandmaster Larry Evans will serve as commentator of key games for spectators at the upcoming 2007American Chess Association US Open Chess Championship to be held @ the Oasis Resort Casino in Mesquite September 1-3. Evans has won USCF's US Chess Championship four times- in1951,1962,1968 and 1980. He also won the USCF's US Open Chess Championship four times- in 1951,1952,1954 and 1971. Evans tutored Bobby Fischer from 1968-1972 and guided Fischer to his capturing the FIDE world title in a famous match against Boris Spassky in 1972. Fischer obtained the WCF version of the world title in 1992, also defeating Spassky in another famous match. Evans has had a very successful career in chess journalism, from founding American Chess Quarterly to being editor of Chess Digest to having a weekly chess column, Evans on Chess, which has appeared in more than fifty separate newspapers. He also writes a column for the World Chess Network. Evans has also been commentator for Time Magazine and ABC's Wide World of Sports, including the 1972 Fischer/Spassky match, the 1993 PCA version of the world title between Kasparov/short, and the 2000Braingames match of Kramnik/Kasparov. The 2007 American Chess Association US Open Chess Championship is being hosted by the Nevada State Chess Association with the assistance of International Monetary Systems through which it obtained the facilities of the Oasis Resort Casino via its membership with that barter/trade network with which it is a member.
