Malabon, city north of Manila hosted the 2008 Philippine Young Masters Chess Tournament last November 30,2008 at the Tanong Elementary School , Malabon City.The one day 6-Rounds Swiss System open to all high school and elementary students age 15 years old and below, saw tne participation of the new breed of Filipino chess players.Familiar faces in Philippine chess like IM Barlo Nadera, IWM Cristine Rose Mariano, NM Dennis Gutierrez and National Arbiter Ernie Baltazar join the tournament in an unfamiliar role as father and mother coach to their sons and daughters. 11 yrs old Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar son of national arbiter Ernie Baltazar topped the elementary boys division while Myka Sofia Gutierrez ,daughter of National Master Dennis Gutierrez is the elementary girls top performer. Chessa Mae Nadera,daughter of International Master Barlo Nadera and Justine Nicole Mariano , daughter of International Woman Master Cristine Rose Mariano finished second and fourth respectively in the high school girls division topped by Jan Ira dela Cruz of Lakandula High.Over-all champion is 15 yrs.old Steven Dacanay of Quezon City , Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar finished second while Kristian Cristobal of Pasay City is third over-all.
