2008 Caloocan City Open Chess: KENNETH BY A KNOCK OUT
The grand final of the 2008 Caloocan City Open Chess Tournament was held on December 13-14,2008 at the J.Ramos Barangay 7 Hall,Caloocan City.The twenty -two topnotchers played in a knock out event in which two games matches at a time control of 25 minutes followed by another game if necessary to determine the champion. An 11 year old boy knock out four veteran opponents in two days to capture the title. Former national age-group champion,11 year old Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar defeated 63 year old senior champion Paterno Pitero 3.0:1.0 in the final match watch by more than one hundred chess fans. Baltazar eliminated Ely Galang (55yo) in the second round 2:0, Adrian Crescini of Caloocan City(40yo) 3.0:1.0 in the third round then crushed Malabon champion Ric Sardowa (30yo) 2:0 in the semi-final.* Caloocan City (3 rd largest city in the Philippines in terms of population with 1.3 million people) . Meanwhile in Malabon city Xavier Verdun(elo rating 2236),28 years old of Bacolod City hacked out 5.5 points in the six round Swiss-System edging out via a higher tie-break Earist bet Narciso Gumila to bag the 2008 Malabon Non-Masters Chess Tournament.Divisoria bet Sherwin Tiu racked up 5.0 points and the highest tie-break in six-persons logjam to nail the second runner-up honors.Jose Camaya took the third runner-up honors.Caloocan'Emil Chua got fourth runner-up honors.Other winner's include; Janine Krishna Saquing, Jacquelyn Sales both of the University of the East women's team and Develyn Navarro for the top female.
