SIngle RR Pairing - Colors

Sort:
mcfrazier

I'm 3rd seed in a 5 player single round robin tournament. For some reason my pairings have me playing 3 games as Black and only 1 as White, while the 5th seed has 3 Whites and 1 Black. What's more, I have Black against that player.

I don't really mind; my stats say I score about 10% lower as Black than as White, but I'm in it mostly for fun. Still, I am curious: is this normal?

I would think that balancing colors would be one of the goals in pairing a single (meaning each player faces each one of the others only once) round robin. It's not like it's impossible. If we just switch the colors in my game against the 5th seed, everyone in the tournament will have 2 games as White and 2 as Black.

Or am I misunderstanding things? Is this not really a single rr but a double rr with the games divided up into two rounds? In other words, will I play 4 addtional games against the same players after I complete the games I'm currently in?

If it is a double round robin, how would anyone here know? The USCF rulebook (5th ed.) shows the pairings for a single round robin for 5 or 6 players on page 295. Your tournament director should have that book. Notice with 5 players, pairing number 6 is a bye. The pairing numbers are assigned by lot. Was your "seed" based on ratings? That should work and is not the problem you have. In the table is below the colors look even.

  1. 3-6 5-4 1-2
  2. 2-6 4-1 3-5
  3. 6-5 1-3 4-2
  4. 6-4 5-1 2-3
  5. 1-6 2-5 3-4

Sorry, I should have specified:

This is a tournament on Chess.com. The pairings were made by computer, and there is no bye because this is correspondence chess, not OTB. All play all simultaneously.

What I'm wondering is if this is a) a single round robin with messed up (by the computer) pairings, or b) a double round robin with only half the games played at a time.

(By comparison, in every single other double rr correspondence event I've been in--USCF or Chess.com's "turn-based" events--I've been paired twice against each player, one game as white, one as black.)

ah. i see. well, you will next have 3 white games and 1 black - the reverse of now. once you finish one of those games, you will have another game with each opponent and colors reversed.

Okay, got it. Now I understand. Thanks! Smile

"Speedy Quick One" 5(1) tournament began yesterday 31Aug2008.

Pairings came up unbalanced.

Seeds 1 and 4 (me) have 2W & 2B.

Seeds 2 (TD) and 5 have 3W & 1B.

Seed 3 has 0W & 4B.

If these pairings are computer generated, how long to get it repaired?

(Post #1 by McFazier's was over six months ago.)

** end of quote **

There is nothing to fix.

...double round robin with only half the games played at a time.

As stated above by erik "you will have another game with each opponent and colors reversed".

TadDude (4:49pm):

If you'll read my post again (and McFrazier's), you'll see that both are in reference to single round robin (SRR).

Eric's March 14th post and your Sept. 1st post are both in reference to double round robin (DRR).

The description is unclear: (one game per opponent starts immediately)

All tournaments are double round robin here but the tournament director chose the option of playing the second game after the first is done.

bpersell and malko are on their second game now.
