@kco, did you tried to play live game, blitz/bullets? (not much from your activity it seems) Those are really psychological games, and playing the board is just easier said than done. Try it.

Put your browser at full screen mode for consistency, then attach a piece of duct tape to the spot on the monitor that the opponent's rating appears at.
Problem solved!

So people made kind of goofy comments, but I understand where you're coming from. The battle may be lost psychologically from the start by focusing on your opponent's rating rather than the game. I think the true issue though is not whether you should be able to turn off the displayed rating, but really about your confidence as a player. I'm sure you've beaten people with higher ratings before. Try to get in touch with yourself as a player, and transfer that to the board. It's easier said than done, but it's possible, and it's worth it. Save the psychology for over the board games. ;)
From my experience, perhaps for psychological reason, I played better if I did not know my opponents rating. If this is not only me, and also others, perhaps we can have an option in settings, to disable opponent's rating display.
I still wanted to search oponent within +- 100 rating of me but when I get one that is +100 I don't want to be discouraged and mentally lost before the game whenever seeing their rating.
Just a thought, a setting in profile like currently we can disable chat would be nice. (Though maybe I can manually set "playerrating" class in CSS into no display but this is inconvinient)
