vacation time is ridiculous

The vacation time option is ridiculous. I have two daily games that have been abandoned for so long. “They have months and months of vacation time left “. Why is vacation time even an option. You can’t pause a ten minute game and abandon it for months. Why on a daily game? That option should be removed.

Hmm. Both of the games you have that are on vacation started this month (August) so neither has been on vacation for "months."

One has three weeks left. The other has five weeks left.

Sometimes people need a break. Everyone has their own reasons.

Fair enough, I exaggerated the length of time. Kudos on your due diligence. But why is vacation time a necessary option? The player signed up for a one day match, if they can’t play within a day they abandon it. Like a timeout resignation in a ten minute game. And if there is an allotted vacation, why months? Why not maximum seven days? A ridiculous option in my humble opinion.

Actually, reading it again, I didn’t say they had abandoned it for months, I said for “so long”. The quotation is what the computer says when I press on the opponents pause icon or when less than a month is left it says more specifically how much vacation they have left

Daily games can take months to complete, even without vacation. May players also have a number of games ongoing, in different stages of completion. There are also Daily tournaments that can take years to end.

Since games take so long, there will be times when a player may need to be away and vacation allows that. In addition, premium members automatically get placed on vacation when low on time in one or more daily games, with the exception of those in no vacation tournaments.

I am trying to play a chess game and it says I am disconnected. Why? I was about to enter into a Ruy Lopez.

I just started playing dailies... I have an opponent in a losing position who now has 90 days to avoid his inevitable loss and me possibly even forgetting about this game? This is not fair. You agree to play a game where you have 24 hours to move you should stick to that time constraint. Imagined a world tournament and Nepo is losing, suddenly her playas the "vacation" tactic. LAME Chess. com. This needs fixing. I suggest offering and option to play daily games were not vacation is allowed. I was quite surprised to see this being pulled out of my opponents bag of tricks.

What if they need to take a vacation literally. And don’t want to bring their iPad or phone or whatever so they just dont.

Your opponent just went on vacation. He has been a member for 10 years.  He has completed 318 daily games.  He has only a handful of losses by timeout.

There is no reason to predict that he will take 90 days.

Agreed they need to get rid of vacation

Gosh @Scovilleunits, he resigned that same day and didn't make you wait 90 days.

I am currently playing a daily game (7 days per move) and the player hasn't played an opening move in over 3 weeks. They currently have 71 more days of "vacation" before the game is considered abandoned.

I'm all for long format chess and allowing particular outlying examples to justify additional time. But OP has a point, the current format is ridiculous. I've also had several times where my opponent is in a losing position, and so they abandon the game and go on vacation out of spite. OP has a point

I mean . . . How hard can it be to open your phone for a second and make a move everyday. Vacation time is illogical.

Games can last months and events years. A lot of things can come up; they can be sick, be on actual vacation, have a family emergency, work is really busy.

A lot of daily players also spend significant time going over variations, researching other games, etc, and don't just get on, spend a few minutes, and make a move. So, vacation allows players a chance to set aside games for a brief time when life makes it harder to play a quality game.

If you don't like vacation, there's always the option of no-vacation events.

I agree, I literally always moved within 2-3 hours in a daily game (except if the opponent moved overnight and it was 12-15 hours later). Why would you need vacation time just to login, look at a position, and make a move. I've done it at red lights while driving.

More serious daily Chess players don't play like that. They often spend hours on a position, trying out multiple variations, researching other games with the same or similar positions, and then take a break to come back and look at the position and candidate moves with fresh eyes later. Many members don't play as if it was just a long time control game.

I have a lot of opponents that go on vacation after the first move.. I think the vacation timer is [removed -- MS]
