Yes I used the same adjectives.

Two locked topics without a reason given. Only vague statements on commitment to act or even distractions.

The site has happily allowed kids on the site with unenforceable safety preconditions (parental guidance required etc) while kids proudly state that they're on the forums without their parents' knowledge.

Let's stop pretending.

These same kids attract trolls and idolize them and then get repulsed when they get targeted themselves. But then they're just kids.

While imposing a week of silence on new accounts won't stop determined trolls at least it would slow them down.

Having a high priority report path for such cases and punishment for misreporting could also help. Ofc this assumes someone is actively checking these tickets 24/7.

Images/videos hidden until view is enabled like in DMs would also help.

Martin and Richard have both said that they're actively addressing this issue, but that it would take time to implement these changes. It makes no sense to me that you are allowed to post pictures on a 5-minute old account, and that you can make as many alternate accounts as you want on one device, in about three minutes with a new email. Let's hope that they finally hear our complaints and choose to do something, rather than ignoring us.

Too little too late. All the resources they spent on v3, emojis, flairs, votes, frills, brilliant moves ... Things that no sane member ever asked for - primarily to draw kids in. It's not like there were no active complaints.

What happened to safety first?

Especially with baby (kids, not the troll) on board.

Maybe the Dubai girls could take one for the team and draw the other trolls away. Now that would be a happy ending.

At this point, they're a more reliable presence on the forums than even the mods. Probably cause they get paid. Rain or shine, the Dubai girls are fine.

Yes, chess.com does need to work on this, it’s a serious issue.

I thought that the responses were timely and relevant.

Thanks for the response @justbefair but I didn't.

@Richard's post starts by thanking the community and acknowledging the distress felt by the community. Then there is an assurance of current and future action followed by an expression of commitment to safety.

Nothing specific about what actions are to be taken. The commitment to the forums means very little given past behavior and attitude of the site to them. Just words

What has changed? What will change?

Thanks for this post, Sawdof. I am beyond frustrated and see this website as purely harmful to children in its current state.

trolls are literally allowed to post eye bleach pics and not get it taken down in an hour. for a site as large as chess.com it is very irresponsible to not have an active mod at all times. even reddit with unpaid mods can take down pics faster than chess.com.

Some of that is very likely being decided and architected in relatively real time and solutions may or may not end up being the first ideas that are being discussed. In addition, some details may actually help potential abusers figure out ways around planned changes in advance.

While I can't speak for all mods, I would prefer that I didn't have to deal with the multiple kinds of persistent abuse either and am awaiting solutions at least as eagerly as anyone else.

It's going to take some time, especially to do it well and have the least amount of chances of majorly inconvenience legitimate existing and potential new members in the process.

So what are these solutions the team has thought of

agreed.

It sounds like 1 of 2 things are being implemented: 1) Absolutely nothing or 2) some kind of automated process that is bound to not work or break other things. I have zero faith in any kind of system that relies on its own secrecy in order to be effective and frankly I am leaning towards option 1 being more likely anyway. Their last solution was a simple campaign just telling members to ignore and report. Look what good that did.

That wasn't the solution, just a recommendation to not interact with abusive members to give them what they want.

The site is working on some technical solutions but overall details aren't available outside of staff at least and there's a good chance not everything that ends up being implemented will be communicated.

Agree on the failure of security by obscurity alone.

But I do agree with the policy of reporting instead of creating forums or interacting with the trolls as that just pollutes the forums.

So it's business as usual. We'll get a v4 we didn't ask for.

Thanks Martin for responding. The paragraph above was aimed at the powers that be on site, not the mods.

Very good!

the bunny is very pleased to announce that he was muted while trying to report IB. fortunately the moderator was spared the unacceptable description of the offence while the offender continued for more than an hour.

think thrice and hard before you report folks. the terms you use may be offensive and that's probably a lot worse than the offence you might be reporting.

should have said "poop graphics of an adult nature" instead of what i wrote. deepest apologies for hurting the feeling of the bots and mods.

I'm still offended by what you just said

How you always manage to escape justice I'll never know
