Trivial replies

I have noticed dozens of trivial replies in the topic of Chess Notation consisting of only one or two characters. When I hear of a new reply in that topic, my first thought is "why bother?".

Can this abuse be curtailed? TIA

Hmm. I finally figured out that you were talking about a blog post that Chess.com CEO Erik made 17 years ago- https://www.chess.com/article/view/chess-notation

I saw the posts you were talking about. They didn't strike me as abusive. They were just trivial. They didn't add anything to the discussion. I think that people often make trivial posts so that they can follow a topic. (I think the default setting is to automatically follow any topic that they post in.)

If you are bothered by the notifications you are getting after a trivial post, perhaps you could unfollow the post.

Unfortunately, AI has not yet evolved to the point where it can screen out such trivial posts for you.

Is there way that a user, when reading a thread, can select Follow this thread or Unfollow ...? That would remove the need to make a trivial post in order to be alerted to new replies.

Yes. There is a checkbox for that at the top of the thread. But I think most people don't use it.
