It is irresponsible and negligent to not have a paid mod team
How about Erik himself is forced to stare at every image posted in his forum for 10 seconds and see how he feels about his own website.
*sigh* People who are criticise Chess.com in this regard never realise that if Chess.com were to start cracking down on trolls, they'd be one of the first people to get muted and/or banned. Chess.com actions that objectionable stuff very quickly, but the forums are only a tiny fraction of the functionality of this web site and not its main offering: while they had some aspirations to be the social media site for chess players early on, they're definitely not that and don't have or need the same sort of team.
I'm on here a lot and the only time I've seen such images is when a person with a grudge against Chess.com keeps on creating new accounts and doing the same thing. The most motivated person I've seen lasted a couple of months, but finally got tired of it and stopped. The bot accounts that create advertising posts for gummies and escorts are more of an issue, and I'm disappointed that Chess.com hasn't figured out a way to sift them out from actual people: they rely on the moderators cleaning up after a couple of hours, so I guess they don't feel it's worth the development resources to change, or the disruption to members that any actual preventative action would require.
People should know what they're getting into when they sign up for the website. Parents should know the risks before they let their kids use it. CC doesn't have any special obligation to protect its users, but I agree that it creates a very soft target for predators and potential abusers.
@David I truly feel sorry for you if you think that me calling anyone a moron is nearly on the same level as exposing children (and adults) to potentially traumatizing images. This site is the way it is because Erik prioritizes growth and new members over the experience of existing members. Hands down, I've seen g0re and p0rn on here because of greedy policies. For example, it would be really easy to simply not allow new accounts to post images. But for some reason Erik is against this. Erik is a moron and should pay attention to the things kids are exposed to as a result of his negligent policies.
At the time of this post the troll is currently active and will just post more of this. It's absolutely unacceptable for a company this size and with its resources to simply allow this to happen. Yes, that is what you are doing, Erik, no matter how your mod team tries to reframe their efforts.
I feel like they should categorise reports, like game chat, forum, clan chats etc. Also they should dedicate set periods of time where a mod has to be active all the way to there is less de motivation and disorganisation
I've been looking into the line that is drawn when it comes to negligence and accountability for things posted in a forum from a legal standpoint. While user-generated content is protected generally, there is a case to be made for a lack of "moderation in a timely manner" potentially. This is not a threat, just an observation.
Yes I agree x6px but since it's not a paid position they are not assigned shifts to cover the forum 24/7, hence this thread.
