Today I ran a tournament for schools in our area and had a great showing of 76 students from 14 different schools from 1st grade to seniors. While not a USCF-rated tournament, I tried to run it at the same level....until.
One of my two floor directors came up to me to verify the insufficient material rule. "Bishop and a king" is a draw, right?" Yup. So I went over to the board to inform the 2nd and 3rd grader of this and that is when I realized, the board didn't have a King AND Bishop versus a king. All that was on the board were two pieces--a King and a bishop. Yup...that's insufficient material, alright.
I have heard Ben Finegold relate his story of a scholastic tournament where he was told by the two players that they had traded Kings "long ago." Didn't think I'd see such a thing myself. Funny times.
