Visualizing chess for novices

Hey Chess.com! I'm a college senior working on a capstone. I'm building a digital chess application that I hope will help novice chess players visualize chess strategy and help them play better. This link will give you a good idea of what I have in mind:

My project is still in its early stages and I am hoping to collect as much feedback as I can. No feedback is too harsh or too honest. I'd love to hear about how helpful you think this could be, about other applications that are similar, and anything else you can think of.

too many colours

I think you got something good there. The pin and the fork is a cool thing how you have the icons standing in for it, I would definitely like to try your program.

I think, this is very usefull not only for basics.

 I used space visualisation in several chess programs, but they have not enough. Imo mixed colours is the best option.

I think, you can go on and visualise more complicated pieces (e.g. those in assessment of the position computer programs do). 

I think this project is really cool.   A novice might find the space visualization a little confusing though.   I love your creative way of indicating pins and forks :)  Good luck to you!
