I would suggest "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess". On Amazon.com it is highly rated with 58 reviews which will give a good feel for the book. Please don't be put off by the word "Idiot's" which is just a sales idea for a series of books. I'm studying it and I really like it. There is one diagram for each move described in most cases. It has a good index and a good table of contents. It's available in most book stores, but at Amazon.com it is discounted. Amazon.com has it for about $10 depending on what kind of copy you want. Retail price is $16.95.
