Whose law? I'm a little confused, I thought this sort of policy was created by sites with mature content. I don't have to worry about it, I'm 18, but I'm curious about the nature of this law. It seems a little unfair that kids have to be supervised on a site as tame as chess.com. If it were something like *ch*n (certain letters censored so as not to give kids any ideas), I could totally see a policy. If it were an adult site, I know the law, but chess.com? What law, might I ask, that I might go to get it repealed?

I am not sure if it is an actual law, it probably is somewhere in the world, but I think it is mainly there to stop the site from being sued by angry parents who do not watch their kids and then are mad when something bad happens and they get kidnapped or commit suicide or other sorts of drama. Blame irresponsible parents, not the law in this case.

well on the contrary there is obviously something wrong with that kid. no kids should be thinking of scuicide, and  to get kidnapped you would have to be stupid to agree to meeting someone somwhere right

sorry i missed a word i meant to write "no control over" not "contol over" sorry so you can relax now

no kids should be thinking of scuicide. Uh, exscuse me, but 2 high-shoolers have already commited suicide this schoolyear. And if you are questioning their intelligence, I go to one of the most prestigious private schools in America. It is the sad truth. Many suicides have been based on "cyber-bullying." It is something America needs to try to stop.

its not what america need to stop  its what PARENTS need to CONTROL   SUPERVISE your kids   i get so irritated when a parent say "my daughter ran away because of Myspace or ect"  no ur child ran away cause u didnt pay attention!!!
Alex_M
Unfortunatly, many parents are stupid, and don't listen to the intelligent people of the world. It's gotten so bad, I believe the government needs to get involved. No laws or anything, but they definetly need to promote Internet supervision as much as they do underage drinking.

That's the stereotype, but I believe that, statistically, most of the people who are cyber-stalked are forced into a meeting because they are afraid that someone will find out they have been wrongfully talking to someone on the internet.  Do not judge the intelligence or emotional state of someone you do not know at the precocious age of 14 :)

I actually take offence to the statement that we have no control over the law. I concede, it is true, but that must be changed. Power to the people, in my opinion. Anyway, cyber bullying is something that happens to people who pretty much ask for it. If you put up an open video chatroom without the ability to block unwanted people, you're asking for someone to come on and try to get you to strip. I hate to say it, but there are very immoral people, and you have to be careful. That's why parents ought to make sure their kids aren't doing things like that. However, here, the only thing that could happen is some kid gives away his personal information, which is something that parents should discourage, anyway. THAT is the dangerous act, not use of the website. No, underage use of websites such as this should not be illegal, but internet safety education is very important. Very few cases of cyber bullying ever happen to people who don't do anything dumb. That includes kids.

Extremely well put, Unbeliever. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I was 14 within the past 5 years, I remember what it's like. To meet somebody in order to cover up that you're talking to somebody makes no sense. NONE, I don't care about your emotional state or your "precocious" age. The only way you can be blackmailed into meeting someone is if you never think. Period. Half a second of thought is all it would take. After that, you take whatever's coming to you. Being grounded is better than being ground up. Any 14 year old should know that, and if they don't, it's the responsibility of the parent to set them straight.

Most 14 year-olds are arrogant enough that they will meet someone off the internet and, if trouble arises, they can get away.  The other situation I was referring to, is mostly among 10-12 year olds, who are fearful that their parents will find out and, usually make an agreement with the person they are talking to that this meeting will be the only one, and then they will stop communication.

You, at 18, can evaluate the possibilities rationally.  A 14 year-old has arrogance and blind inertia on his/her side, and cannot give the assessment you have just given.  Note that I am speaking stereotypically, if any 14 year-olds are on this site, do not take offense, what I am saying hopefully does not apply to you.

An example of the lack of rational thinking of some people underage can be found earlier on this thread, with certain personas announcing their ages for the 100,000 users on Chess.com to see.  That is all I will say on this topic in the public forums.  If you truly wish a continuance of this discussion, join the Open Discussion group or message me privately.

oh wow thats a lot to read lol but I would never go and agree to meet some one with out telling my parents or asking if they could go with and there is a 99.9% chance that im not even gonna think about agreeing with someone to go meet them some where, even if I ask my parents! I am one of those kids who dont lie to their parents, keep BIG secrets from them like sneeking out of the house to go meet a boy (which I would never do) or getting a really bad grade and hiding it from them (I would never do that either). Well I know u prob. think im a little goodie goodie but im not..theres nothing wrong with telling the truth!

Anyone care to comment plz feel free!
