Help! School chess club

Sort:
sheep27

Hi! I started my school chess club today and I relised I needed alot of advice. There is no adult help (i'm a student) because the libarian dosen't know how to play, and about twenty people showed up. Unfortuately twenty people takes up all the boards we have. I was just wondering what is the best way forward and how to best keep the people interested. Thanks. P.S. It is at lunch time so there is only half an hour (aftering eating!) for chess.

here's a good site with a coaching section that should help you get started

also there must be a teacher who can help out, who is a chess player, and i think most school clubs need an adult sponsor anyway (?) ... maybe an ad in your school newspaper can shake some help out for you ... or ask teachers you know to ask around ... you'll at least need some more help if you have twenty people ... but you might find those numbers thinning soon enough ...

maybe while eating you can do a demonstration on a chess problem, opening, tactic, etc ... that way you can utilize the little bit of time you have ... once you get a bit more organized and find out who the players are that will continue to attend, you can find a longer time period for the group to use ... half an hour is really short especially if you're trying to teach something then play some games and also have time to get a sense of each person's skill level

You need an adult to help run a school chess club.  Its not simply about playing chess, but to ensure behaviour of everyone etc.

Surely any teacher at school could help out, because I guess at least one knows how to play chess.

Also organise a touranment, and the winner can get an award in school assembly.

I've done this for years.  You really do need an adult.  Even a non-teacher might be able to come and and help run it.  How about right after school?  See if you can get someone to donate or buy one of the easel based teaching boards.

Thank you for the advice, I am planning to have a tournament and to check out to see if any teachers play chess. I checked if people would be willing to stay after school, but half the group couldn't or wouldn't. I have started a group on chess.com and I am currently trying people to create an account and , so when every one is on I can hold more extensive tournaments after school. Thank you again for the help.

OK, once you get the adult needed, determine playing levels. I teach chess in schools for a living so I deal with this regularly. You have to figure out what playing levels everyone is at. This way you can gear each meeting accordingly. I would suggest picking a theme for each meeting such as e pawn openings, d pawn openings, opening traps, middle game tactics, etc. Have a monthly tournament. Replay famous games with everyone analyzing each move. Have a bughouse day. The list is endless. Message me if you need any assistance with topics, etc.

Try hosting a BC tournoment to improve tactics

BC stands for a not so school apropriate name in a variant where the goal is to try to get ones king to the other side first and as quickly as possible

I must admit I am a bit nervous about starting the whole thing cause of the whole nerd stareotype chess has but I got over it. I'm sure other kids might feel this way to dispite loving the game cause there were a few kids like that at my old school  so another question from me is what can get kids outer there shell to come and be apart.

Well I'm the president of the chess club at my high school so I can help here.

You do need an adult to supervise and make sure everything goes ok. This year's teacher is actually really into the game which really makes things go smoothly. Try and find an adult passionate about chess.

When teaching people or playing people not as skilled as you, emphasize how to improve. I'm probably the best in the club right now, but I don't want it to stay that way necessarily. I want everyone else to beat me and force me to improve, making everyone better at the game we love.

Have them all make chess.com accounts. The teacher had us do this (I already had one) and it helps keep organized and lets us play when we're not together.

While talking about Chess.com, something we've started doing that's helping a lot is reviewing as a class, a live game we played and have the player explain it and everyone ask questions and suggest better moves. Get everyone involved.

Make sure everyone watches the "Everything you need to know" playlist on Chess.com's youtube page www.youtube.com/wwwchesscom. Even more experienced players find that they didn't know something basic.

That's what I can pitch in I do hope your club starts running more smoothly. Cheers.

yeah, I think someone i played otb yesterday studied one move tactics last knight cause i showed him one after he missed it, and he plays a smothered mate after i blunder into it, to be fair though i said Oh F*** before that

Only half an hour for chess?  When I go to my local club, I'll play for, at least, five to six hours, averaging about 20 to 30 minutes per game.  How time flies when your having fun!
