How does one successfully determine the correct move in this position?
 
[Black to move]
 
My thought process is clearly flawed because I never would've figured out the correct move. Please help me with a step-by-step of your thoughts in determining the correct move.

Ra1 would be mate so Qxgb4 which also threatens Qxb2 suggests itself. Then on defence, considering gxh7, kh8, black is safe.
