I'm not 100% sure how to use the editing tools, so I have not annotated it unfortunately...

I've seen this before.

Solved in 3 seconds.

Because I published it before Laughing

I got it first time . I actually never saw this before , but figured that en passant must be the only solution

... En passant requires that the black pawn has pushed two squares in one move. There is no information about that, so this move is probably illegal....

Actually it says

White to move
1... b5

 at the starting position

Chessstudent
how we supposed to know the pawn was en passant?
Decoy321

Well if you're aware of the en-passant rule this is friggin' easy..

Agh, of course. Then it is legit indeed...

neneko
a little side note is that the pawn couldn't have moved from b6 to b5 since white is in check when the pawn  is at b6.
Redwall
en passant, the past pawn. Thank's for posting

Actually I don't think that black could have made any other move than b7-b5, so the information "1... b5" is not necessary...

The only reason I got it quickly was at the old chess club I went to, my teacher set basically the same problem up on the board and we had to figure it out.  It's a pretty tricky problem if you don't know your chess.

I think fxg6 was possible so 1.... b5 was necessary

SiColl007
Thanks for all the comments - b5 was only included because the editing thingy didn't let me go straight into the en passant, without knowing it was an en passant - so I think that was a software glitch...
rangaswamy_vs
that was good one!

I saw the same thing; hxg6 works too, but it's the same idea.  The puzzle wouldn't have been truly accurate without the 'b5' caption.

What other move could black make before getting to this position?

fxg6 or hxg6.
