Wouldn't white play Queen to a6 for checkmate?
Need help with this self mate in 2
It's a 'selfmate.' The goal is to force black to checkmate you. You have two moves as white to get yourself checkmated by black.
Einstein... can't black just play b4xc3 after Q f2? and he can even play b3 x c2 after the next move... or even after Qg2, he has Kb4
If there is a pawn capture available, then the pawn can capture if he likes. But it is not a requirement. The pawn can push foward if he wishes. Maybe you thought the capture was forced?
Rainbow Rising had the correct solution (according to the puzzle app - it doesn't provide you the answers or else I wouldn't have posted, but tells you when you are correct.)
Even in yours Einstein, without the forced pawn captures (which I was thinking had to be factored in), the king had the escape at b4, so that's why it didn't work.
I didn't come up with Rainbow's, since in several of the other selfmates I could have sworn it would do something like capture the knight on c3, and I wouldn't be able to complete the selfmate. That's why I was thinking I had to move the knight first.
Thanks everyone!
I like that one for if it did take knight. That's why I'm confused about these selfmate puzzles on the iPhone. I guess you're supposed to assume that it won't make a pawn capture unless it's forced? To me, this particular puzzle seems a bit bugged.
The only one it accepts as correct is the one Rainbow Rising posted. Since he deleted his comment, am I not supposed to provide the solution?
yeah im not sure mine works now lol!
Yours consistently seems to be the correct one, although if pawn takes knight then it wouldn't work.
If you click the info on the selfmate in the app it's only instructions are:
"Selfmate is a chess problems in which white, moving first, must force black to deliver checkmate within a specified number of moves against his will." [sic]
In tihs particular case it doesn't look the mate is forced since black his options to avoid being forced to mate.
oh wait mine does work
in self mates, you are meant to force your opponent to mate you. he is trying NOT to mate you, you are trying to get him to mate YOU.
So:
Bd1
black has 2 moves
1)bxc Qc2+ bxc2#
2) b3 Qd4
now black has one legal move
b2#
OH I see two ways based on whether he does take the knight or not!
We can close this support ticket:) You helped a lot!
I can't figure this self-mate out and it's driving me crazy. I'm sure the answer will be simple and I'll have a <palm to forward moment> (This is from the iphone chess puzzles app "Surkov, 1997")
Obvioulsy I need to let b4 get to b2 mate, so the first move I'd imagine has to be moving my knight. But then I have an issue with the pawn taking the bishop at c2 or the queen being able to take the pawn at b2.
