why would black blunder a knight for no reason

It was an intentionally bad opening

Giuoco Piano Game: Four Knights Variation, Pseudo-Herrstrom Gambit

The evaluation bar at first reads +1.1 if the move Bb4 is found, but it actually ends up being a draw. Nxg5 is not the best move, even though it looks like a much better Fried Liver with Black missing their g-pawn. This is because of Bg4, which practically forces Be2, and after Bxe2 and Qxe2, Nd4 simply is a tempo-gaining move, and the evaluation bar is at +0.4.

@snandorthegreat the move c4 is already existing theory and isn't a gambit either

"Positional way to the caro kann"

What do you mean? The caro is probably the most positional way to play against 1. e4.
