very obvious and easy, what's the point of this puzzle?
whats with the legal in the title? how is there an illegal mate in 1?
This is one legal himself played before.
David, do you mean Legall? And why does 4. ... Nc6 get a "?". It seems like after 5. h3 Bxf3 black is not lost.
Black's best move is 5. ... Be7.

In your first "blue" position, this is a standard Philidor trap and there is nothing wrong with backing the bishop up to h5.
6. Nxe5 NxNe5
7. QxBh5 NxBc4 and black remains a solid piece up.
In order for the trap to work, neither black knight should be developed.
