Just to be sure what is the point of the puzzles? What am I solving in each puzzle?

Don't know what objective I'm going for when doing the puzzles. What's the goal?

KetoOn1963

Pattern recognition.

Can you be a little more specific?

KetoOn1963

The point of doing tactics is to increase your pattern recognition.

Most puzzles on chess.com are unclear in relation to the "objective" even the official ones. Puzzles belong to the domain of composition and they have absolutely unambiguous objectives and solutions. Chess.com and most puzzle posters try to create a mix of game play and composition logic. You must be a bit crazy to solve the puzzles. For instance, when you solve a chess.com puzzle you are usually required to find the only move that brings you the desired result. But at some point that changes when there are many winning moves and you suddenly gotta find the checkmate in 1 or 2 moves. That sounds insane and indeed it is insane. There are many perversions related to the state of the engines. For instance, a plus 4 eval is great for an engine but a human may be happier with plus 2 in a position he is comfortable with. It is a mistake to believe this is because the engine knows better. In 200 years tomorrows engines will only generate 0.0, +Mxxx and -Mxxx scores and the difference between +4 and +2 disappears. By that time engines will finally do what composition chess has done for a 100 years - only deliver perfect answers.

Thanks for posting my picture! I am harmless in that state. But when I lift my hat - beware - even Indiana Jones throws his in the ring and starts running!

In each individual puzzle, the goal is simply to find the best move.

In the long term, the goal of solving puzzles is to improve your tactical thinking and pattern recognition, so that you can have an easier time finding tactics in your own games.

I'm new to the game, and I play on a laptop. When doing the puzzles, there is part to right of the puzzle with numbers, etc. I can't find an explanation of what the terms mean: are the ratings the ratings of the player, or of the puzzle. Other parts of this part of the screen are also not obvious to me.
