If you have not solved the problem!? That's the Problem!!!!

Veto

Kd2 seems like the obvious solution but if black plays Nd1 your mate is ruined.

JorickHorn

That's not Mate in 2. Besides, why not go through to the end?

Possible responses by black and counter-responses:

1... Rb1+

2. Bxb1#

1... Rxc2+

2. Kxc2#

1... Nxa2+

2. Rxa2+  K(or R)xa2

1... Nb1?

2. Bxb2#

1... Nd1?

2. Bxb1#

Strike me down if this is a mate in 2!

It's mate in 2. There's a bishop on h8 pinning a piece.

I considered the bishop on h8 in my calculations.

Please read my whole post, and try it out for yourself. Set up a chessboard. There are numerous situations in which mate takes more than two moves.

Possible responses by black and counter-responses:

1... Rb1+

2. Bxb1+  Na2

or 2. Kd2  Rxe1

 Na2 doesn't work because it's pinned.

1... Rxc2+

2. Kxc2+  Nd1

 Nd1 doesn't work because it's pinned.

1... Nxa2+

2. Rxa2+  K(or R)xa2

 2. Kd1#   Rb1 doesn't work because it's pinned.

1... Nb1?

2. Bxb2# (the only checkmate I've found)

1... Nd1?

2. Bxb2+ Nxb2

2. Bb1#    Rook can't move because it's pinned.

Strike me down if this is a mate in 2!

Ok, I've fixed my post (before you quoted it).

There is no response to 1... Nxa2 that results in mate.

Your suggestion, 2. Kd1, is illegal, because it's moving into check.

2. Kd2# is checkmate.... I concede. It's mate in 2. Strike me down, then, get on with it.

Oops. Yeah, i meant Kd2# It's mate for either 1. ... Nxa2+ or Rxa2 since both pieces become pinned.
JorickHorn

Well, after 1... Rxa2

2. Kd2+ Kb2

2. Bxc3#
