2500 puzzle rating vs 900 rapid rating?

Guys… I recently got 2550 puzzle rating which is incredible to me because just 5 days ago I was at 1700. Is this progression good? Also I only have 900 rating in rapid, bullet, and blitz. How is this possible.

Puzzles are way different then actual games.

Getting 2550 is impressive, but how is it possible?

Chess is a combination of openings, strategy, plans, and of course, tactics.

In the puzzles, you just find tactics on a game, that may be in a 2550 game. However, just because you can find tactics like 2500s, does not mean you know the strategy, opening lines, and other things found in a chess game.

I hope this helps!

Thank you 2000Knights for helping me with this question! If I play more standard chess what do u think my rating could go up to?

Just continue playing and find out, no one can answer correctly this question for you unless they analyze your games to find out your strength, there is no relation between your puzzle ratings and standard/blitz ratings

#iamkrishnah it says ur puzzles are 1600. Also I don’t think u can solve puzzles more than 1.25k higher than ur actual puzzle rating

TheGuyThatIsNew

same thing, 1200 rapid but have a puzzle rating around 2700-2800, with a peak at 2910.
I have to improve my openings, strategy, and planning. While also increasing tactics a bit as I tend to drop in a match. If I can fix these areas then I can probably push for 1500 or above,

A high puzzle rating means you can see the end game quite well. However, how do you get your pieces in position for the end game? That is something else.

There was some link I found a month or two ago where someone did a statistical comparison of the bell curves of chess.com rapid, blitz, bullet, and puzzle ratings vs Fide and USCF railings. They compared people who had all those ratings, and I think they had lichens too. Can’t remember where I found it or I would share the link.

The two main points being that blitz ratings correlated the best with over the board ratings. And for beginners and club level sub 2000 players there puzzle ratings are on average about 800 rating points higher than there over the board rating or blitz rating as an approximate estimate. I explain below how this allows you to gage how tactical a player your are for your rating and give some advice on training.

I assume some of the reasons for online blitz ratings being a better gage of standard time control over the board play is because of two reasons. There are more people play blitz, and there is less time variation between the different blitz games so conspiring those who play 3 vs 5 minute games is going to be more accurate than trying to compare those playing 10 minute or 60 minute rapid games. My assumption is that if rapid didn’t include such a wide variance in time controls it would be closer. So if most of your games making up your rating are 30 to 1 hour games that might be better than blitz, but I don’t have any data to back that up as everyone’s ratings include shorter times like 10 minutes.

So the key take away from this explanation is that if you have a puzzle rating that is more than 800 points higher than than your blitz rating you are probably stronger at tactics than you are at positional chess, pawn structures, or your not adhering to good opening principles.

So if you are 1200 at blitz but 2400 at puzzles that means your roughly 2400-1200-800 = 400 rating points higher tactically than the average at your rating. So you should read the two volume manual of positional chess which includes a section on opening principles. Or for a shorter to get thru but less up to date work you can read my system and read about basic opening principles from a entry level chess book. But read one that at least had an entry level explanation of major openings. Then you will probably jump in rating a could hundred points.

If your blitz rating is 1200 but your puzzle rating is 1800 then basic tactics are probably your issue. So either use the chess.com training vids or get a work book like lev alberts tactics for the tournament player. I am currently doing his entire comprehensive chess course and already seeing about a 150 rating improvement after the first two books. If you read his tactics book you will also probably see a rating increase of a couple hundred points.

Yep and you will encounter the lesser ranked god chesser that plays 50 perfect moves and rated 100s of ppints lower that wreck your eilo. We can't name them though....

@sam_wallace

I’ve accidentally moved my puzzle rating to 3000. But I don’t think my rating would be 2200
