2024 West Orange Chess Club Summer Spectacular

Time has come for the 2024 West Orange Chess Club Summer Spectacular!

Below are the details taken directly from the online registration from Head Tournament Director Steve Lorimor.

2024 Summer Spectacular

This form will close at 6:00 p.m. on July 2. On-site registrations will be accepted until 6:45 p.m. Late registrations will be accepted, but may need to take a half-point bye for the first round.

In spite of our best efforts, our new payment system is not ready to go online, so registration is being done “the old-fashioned way”.  Registration fees will be paid in person.

Dates and Time
One game per week on July 2, 9, 16, and 23.  All games begin promptly at 7pm. 

Location
All games will take place at the West Orange Chess Club, located at the Toby Katz Community Center, 650 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. (It’s tricky to find — take the access road between the high school and baseball fields. It’s past the fields.)

Structure
Four rounds, Swiss-style

Sections

Under 600 (plus unrated players age 12 and under),

Under 1200 (plus all other unrated players)

Under 1800

Open

The July published ratings will be used to determine eligibility.

Membership
This is a USCF-rated tournament. All players must have an valid membership.

Time controls
U600 and U1200:  G75 d5

U1800 and Open:  G90 d5

Requested byes
A requested bye is when a player notifies the tournament director they wish to skip a round.

One half-point bye per player is available for any round, but round 4 byes must be requested before the start of round 2.  Only zero-point byes are available otherwise.

Bye requests, questions, and/or notices that one cannot attend a game should be phoned or texted Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720, or e-mailed to [email protected]. Bye requests must be requested no later than 6:00pm on the day of the game.

Registration cost
$25 per player ($20 for club members)

Non-members may join the club for $10 ($5 for under 18, over 50, and West orange residents).

Prizes
75% of entry fees will form a prize pool for each section. The exact amounts and method of distribution to be determined once the tournament begins (ie; we like to spread the rewards out a bit.)
