Sort:

Tuesday August 6th will be the first round of the 2024 West Orange Chess Club Summer Hexads, in which the participants are broken down into groups of six with everyone playing each of their five opponents once.

Here are the details taken directly from the online registration form:

2024 WOCC Summer Hexads

Once you sign up, you are registered for this event unless you contact Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720 (voice or text) or [email protected].

This form will close at 5:30 p.m. on August 6.  On-site registrations will be accepted until 6:45 p.m.  Late registrants have a severe chance of not being admitted to the tournament.  We STRONGLY recommend signing up online.

What
A rated round-robin tournament featuring groups of six (“hexads”).  If the lowest skill group does not have exactly six people, it will be run Swiss-style.

When

The tournament is one game per week on August 6, 13, 20, 27, and September 3.  Make-up games can be played on September 10 and 17.  All games begin promptly at 7pm.

Cost
Registration is $25, but only $20 for club dues-paying members.  Dues for 2024 are $10 ($5 for West Orange residents, anyone under 18, and anyone over 50).

Who

Players of any skill level can partake.  All players must have a USCF membership that does not expire before September 2024.

Where
All games will take place at the West Orange Chess Club, located at the Toby Katz Community Center, 650 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange.  (It’s tricky to find — take the access road between the high school and baseball fields.  Look for a little building at the end of the road.

Time Controls
All sections with an average rating of 1000 or more will have a time control of G90 d5.  Sections with an average rating of less than 1000 will be G75 d5.

Prizes
75% of entry fees will be returned in the form of prizes.  1st place in each section will receive $60.  Second place will receive $30.  If a group has more or less than six players for whatever reason, prizes will be prorated accordingly.

Byes

Half-point byes are not available for hexads as this is a round-robin tournament.  However, makeup games may be played on September 10 and 17.  If a player is unable to attend a game, their opponent will be given the option of either receiving one point for a win win (that does not affect anyone’s rating), or they can play a make-up game.  The tournament director will provide assistance in scheduling make-up games.  In the event a make-up game is unable to be scheduled, a one-point win will be given to the player who was available to attend the original game.

One half-point bye per tournament is allowed to any section being conducted swiss-style.  Half-point byes for the final round must be requested before the start of round two.

Contact
Bye requests, questions, and/or notices that one cannot attend a game should be phoned or texted Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720, or e-mailed to [email protected].  Bye requests must be received by 6:00 pm on the day of a game.

Please note we are still not yet set up for online payments.  If this changes before the tournament we will let you know.  However under the assumption that we will not yet be set up please try to make it on time on August 6th so TD Lorimor can set up the groups and make the pairings hopefully no later than 6:45 PM, as it is a bit more complicated to set up hexads than a traditional Swiss System tournament.

And if you cannot make it for a given round please inform TD Lorimor as soon as possible, by 4:00 PM the day of the round for the hexads groups and by 6:00 PM the day of the round for any groups being run as Swisses (due to having more or less than six players in a group).  The earlier time for hexads enables TD Lorimor to contact your opponent if you cannot make it.  Swisses can always be re-paired so the later time to inform TD Lorimor you cannot make it is acceptable.

Thank you for your cooperation regarding these matters.
