which is a better game for the new person on live

I would like to hear from people about what they think is the best game for new people on live to play.  I have found the 10 min blitz to be a good starting point. Now and then I go down to 5 min but if i go lower then that it becomes too fast and i make stupid mistakes and lose a lot of games.

I used to think the same thing until I played a couple 2(1) games and sort of got hooked on it...I really like the rush of quick thinking, but I'm moving back to 5 minute games, it's really whatever you like best.

The slower the time control the better I think beginners could benefit from playing 35 minute and even 60 minute games versus banging their pieces down and making moves like this 1.e4 e5 2.Qf3 and like this 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Qf6 in 2 minute quickies.

Sometimes I try to play 90 5 games to simulate the actual time controls of real chess tournaments so that I can practice and be prepared for that type of situation.

I really like 7 7 games.  It gives a blitz pace like a 10 0 game but more or less guarantees that I won't run out of time

The ten minute games are helping me. Mostly I just try to avoid leaving pieces en prise, and hope the other guy does just that! What is missing, (thinking of lower-ranked players, or those learning the game), is time to plan, come up with some "chessic ideas" and try to carry them out. I miss the old chess club of my youth where we'd play non-timed games over 45 or 60 minutes, then spend ten minutes in post-mortem. Actually, I think I've learned best from annotated master games, especially Capablanca. (The Cuban kept it straight-and-simple. Anyone can learn to play like he did.... just not so well!)

I enjoy games of all speeds... but the slower the time control, the better my rating!

My quick rating is something like 900... Tongue out

Blitz... about 1250

Long... about 1400

Correspondence... about 1500
