Players Abandoning Games and Leaving Window Open

Sort:

Dear All,

I'd have a question for you. I usually play games on 30 minutes (or more) time control per player. However, I quite frequently encounter players who, after a few moves, (Eg: Only 3-5 minutes have elapsed) will stop playing and simply leave their game window open. As I not a premium user, I can only play one game at a time, and it is quite annoying to have to wait 25+ minutes before being able to start another game.

Is there any way I can set something like "30 minutes time control per game, 5 minutes maximum per move?"

Thanks in advance!

Dario

No, but you can set the game, for example 10 minutes and 1 minute of bonus after a move.

There should be a fine tune that works better with what you are looking for. You can try different setting and see what works better.

As an individual that prefers and plays long games (I made a post on it too) I'll say my 2 cents... once in awhile it does happen unfortunately, either sore losers will flake out or those with laggy connections will leave the game, it happens... not often though.

Unfortunately you can't set the maximum time per move... but being a patient player I really wouldn't like that feature, most that want to play a long game are simply taking their time to think, sometimes slow spots happen when planning but then the game play picks up again.

What's pathetic about this is that there's people who just leave with the window open, come back to make a move to wait for your timer to run out. They can't win by skill, so they try to take your elo by trickery. Please fix this.

Trickery never works, it's a last resort that always fails.

I went afk with music on cause game was really long. When I heard timer, I almost lost. Seriously, is there a method of reporting abuse?

I don't blame a player who try this. Saying this "never" works, is going too far. Some people fall for this some people don't.

Some people even try this OTB, for example they stand up to get some coffee or whaever and if you stand up too, they will move and make your time run.

Also consider some players prefer to have longer time to move, for example thesoulwatcher in another post was asking the oposite of what the OP is asking here, that was to have longer time to make the first move before the system abort the game. Which I can understand if that is the mutual agreement between 2 players to play in whaever time frame they like the most.

Trying to have this personal preferences as the base set up for every body is different deal. At least there is some way to control the time per move as I posted before, it is not exactly what is being asked for, but it is fairly close.

one solution to this will be to implement a button to knok knok the opponent, then if he/she doesnt respond in a while the game ends.

kgwkyle

That would be a cool button

and a good way to annoy the oponent too.

@silversteel0  you don't make any sense... in chess there are 2 timers, your time and your opponent's time... they can't make you use up your time, only you can use up your own time. If they use up all of their time, you still get the win. If you go AFK, you really can't put the blame on your opponent if you aren't paying attention or don't have the attention span.

Thanks to all for you answers. I have nothing against people taking long to make a move, in fact, I personally wait 5-10 minutes myself before making a move I believe to be important. What I was bringing forward was the issue of players purpously allowing time to flow hoping that the other person will go away from keyboard or even resign out of impatience. :)

Usually, this happens when defeat is inevitable. They leave the window on for some time while afk. Then, they make a move after a few minutes when I'm not paying attention (i.e. doing something else such as playing a flash game). Thus, my timer starts to run down. Please, if you're stupid, that's fine, but don't assume other people are as well.

thesoulwatcher

If that comment is referred to me... I never assumed you were stupid, I assumed (from the information given) that you were not paying attention, which you admitted yourself.

SilverSteel0

The point is that at the end of a game (when there's nothing to think about regarding the board and the game becomes trivial) people just stall and hope their opponents leave/afk. In a long game, this becomes rediculous, as there may be very well 10min. on the clock. Thus, some people inluding myself open up a video or video game and wait, assuming that the opponent has left due to connection failure, etc. It is quite rediculous if we lose by this method and there should be a method to report abuse.

thesoulwatcher

If there is a connection failure, it will appear on the side of the board (the chat window), sometimes if there is lag... it will then also tell you your opponent has reconnected.

If there was a method to report abuse, I think ironically that would get abused. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, the jerks on blitz will do almost anything to: 1. Get elo points. 2. Win games. 3. Try to harm you somehow if they lose. (This useally just means throwing a fit, but if their was just a button to press that would send a complant to a computer for no reason or the famous half hearted cheating accusation, most blitz players would most likely have their accounts closed.

If have something more important to do, and can't play games on the computer. Why don't you resign before leaving instead letting one person there waiting for a game that is not going to happend?

I really have dificulties understanding this argument. I understand there is more important things than a chess game, I don't understand why don't resing before standing up from the PC

browni3141

I've forgotten about an ongoing game once (not chess). I was playing a weak bot while browsing the chess.com forums and simply forgot. At least I wasn't playing a human.

Once a game has been started, the ship has sailed. You have agreed to give some of your precious time away to your opponent to use as they see fit.  That was your choice.  Nobody made that choice for you. If they decide to spend their entire allotment on one move, so be it.  If they decide to take a stroll, their choice.

If you don't like the way they are using their time, resign.  If you feel the need to be able to control the way someone is using their time during a match, chess is not for you.  What is it about the concept of "time controls" which is so completely outside your ability to understand?
