Maybe because there rating is at risk? How much higher are we talking about?
How to play high ranked players?
I'd say 2300 and up - check out my complete and pending games. So far I lost only one game - resigned right away after misclicking on teh iPhone. Other than that, not even a draw.
2300 are not generally gonna play 1600's.
You'll have to get your4 ratings up by going through the ranks.
Thats my point - higher ranking players will not play me, and, me, playing in the range is not fun for me and, most likely, not fun for my opponents.
After posting this I tried 3 blitz games - results are public.
It may be a good idea to have qualifying tournaments for new members.

There's no upside to playing a much lower rated player, either he's not very good at chess, and you get a lopsided not very fun game, or he's hideously underrated (like it sounds you are) and you get bushwhacked! If I'm gonna play somebody with 2300 skills... I'd like my rating performance calculated against a 2300 rating -- not 1600!
That's why higher rated players aren't accepting your challenges!
FWIW, one of my first-ever posts to chess.com forums was about the need for a provisional ratings period. But I got shouted down.
Because they want a challenge. To play against a higher rated player, either:
- increase your own rating
- play against a streamer on their show (this is a good one)
- pay them to play against you
- go into the open challenges on live chess and click on a high up one.

Everybody miss the point.
Not fun to play players at your level and lower?
That's exactly what the stronger could tell : not fun to play a "patzer".
It's not about fear (lol) or something like this, ridiculous.
so in order to get elo fast i just need to play a tournament and hope to encounter a high rated player???
How come most are rejecting challenges below their own rating ?
