Disconnects - reasons why

Sort:
Rafalinx

I would like to start a kind of poll about disconnects on live chess.

Most of us who play live chess, often get opponent disconnects in the middle of a game. Sometimes we are at a winning position, sometimes we aren't.

Possibly you already had connection problems and your opponent was left wainting.

Anyway, I do not mean to complain, but to uncover and analyze all possible causes behind the disconnects.

So, if you can shed some light on this topic,

or if you've lived this experience and you can share with us,

or if you want to contribute with your opinion,

or simply if you are creative,

answer in this thread with your comments.

I leave some ideas to launch the debate.
The disconnects occur when (or because):
- Power failure in the city

- Not knowing what to play next move

- Blunder
- Completely lost position
- Boss enters the room
- Mother / father enters the room
- Teacher approaches
- Wife / husband angry again
- Girlfriend / boyfriend requires attention
- Son / daughter pulls the computer plug while playing
- Out of phone battery
- The owner of the tablet requires it back
- Earthquake

- Doctor really needs to prepare you for surgery
- ....

It is obvious that some players disconnect deliberately in lost positions, rather than play on or resign. This is clearly an unsporting way to behave. Equally obviously, some players lose their internet connections inadvertantly and cannot retrieve them in time, before the game is awarded to the opposition. I have lost my connection this way on a number of occasions.

I have seen it stated that the website managers can tell when the disconnection is deliberate, but I cannot see how. Some players deliberately let the clock run down, rather than resign in a losing position. This is equally ungracious, even spiteful.

Agree 100%. Common courtesy says you should resign when you know you're lost. To paraphrase Mark Twain, "It's easy to resign. I've done it hundreds of times!"

it  seems that even when the disconnects occur and when my opponents clock is running down on the return of play i lose 3 or 4 minutes on my clock?

kalaro

Because I got disconnected by my ISP or poor connections.

And while disconnected, I CANNOT see the board.

At least, chess.com should show the board so I can use the time while disconnected, to think of my next move.

kleelof

Chess.com hires dummy players to disconnect to encourage users to post in the forums asking why players disconnect.

My wifi connection keeps crushing... So I avoid playing sometimes , in case the opponent accuses me of cheating or the site warns of account suspension. I don't mind losing (I am not the new Fischer!!!) but I would hate to be seen as a cheater... However , in some cases I have a feeling it's the server's fault , not mine...

Disconnecting would never be seen as a sign of a cheater. Mainly because cheaters don't disconnect, it would defeat the purpose of cheating to begin with.

But the site considers disconnecting as a violation of Fair Play policy... Some players do it on purpose. So I avoid playing when my connection is too bad. Am I wrong??

kleelof

It's never wrong to be considerate of others.

That warning is meant for the jerks who disconnect instead of resigning. Not the person who occasionally has connection issues.

The one that rings true for me is "Doctor really needs to prepare you for surgery."

spilledcoffee

it seems like people know how to disconnect you when your winning.

or  the 3 minutes they are delayed then gets taken of my time when they reconnect.

one player was angry he lost on a simple move and claimed he could screw up an opponents computer.

Earthquake drill, while I was playing on the computer. When I came back it turned out I was called an idiot 5 times a dumb sh** 3, bast*** 2, and my partner said wtf 22 times (it was bughouse)

My Internet connection is fine - why am I getting disconnects?

Unfortunately, having an excellent Internet connection doesn't mean you won't see an occasional disconnect.

There are a number of things that could result in disconnection from the chess server:

  • Not having cleared cookies & history in a long time
  • Downloads or uploads (even sending email) in the background
  • Instant messenger clients
  • Memory-resident anti-virus software
  • Other browser tabs with streaming content
  • Browser add-ons
  • Using a USB wifi key

Here are some things you can do to minimize the risk of disconnects while you play:

1. Use a trustworthy browser: Chrome or Firefox - not Internet Explorer

2. Limit your use of messaging clients, media players, YouTube (etc.), sending/receiving emails, multiple tabs or anything else that may consume a lot of memory

3. Do maintenance chores regularly, clearing cookies, history, temporary internet files ("cache")

4. Suspend or terminate any memory-resident software that may perform memory-intensive background operations
