Here in the Wild West of chess.com it is!
Abandoning instead of resigning
I can agree with you there. There’s only so much chess.com can do. Are you aware if chess.com does IP bans?
It can happen OTB too. As the NM pumpkin head said, it's called doing a Von Bardeleben in the trades. And I don't mean jumping off a window.
Miss the pumpkin head. Wish he'd come back.
It is a rage quit, sometimes they do not think and other times they feel like you are "suffering" from waiting and they prefer to lose like this instead of having good sportsmanship
I figure there are three kinds of people on a site like this. There are people who want to play chess, people who want to win games, and people with real emotional problems. The first group will usually resign a lost position but they also might make you earn the mate. After all you could blunder into stalemate or something. Totally acceptable to make your opponent earn to mate by playing out the moves, and I actually enjoy getting to properly finish. But either way actual players do not just walk away and force you to wait ten minutes for the win. The second group might abandon or semi-abandon as a last gasp. Maybe they wait until the last second to play one more move hoping you have left and *you* end up timing out. Or your connection might be lost. Or some people who don't care about rating and want to actually play may resign the win just to move on. Bottom line by abandoning instead of resigning you *could* end up with a win, and these losers don't actually enjoy chess they just like to win games as though there's some pride in beating a crappy player like me. The third group overlaps with the second. These are people with a psychological problem get actively angry when other people defeat them at chess even if their opponent is perfectly honorable and has simply been the better player this game. These people have been through a lot of abuse, and they've been taught to think of themselves as worthless. When they lose a game those worthless feelings are triggered and lashing out gives them some level of dark comfort. By hurting you by making you sit there for 10 minutes they make themselves feel like you are the dumb idiot and that they have now proved their dominance. But deep down they think they are worthless and of course in reality their childish stunt has only proved that you are not only the better player but the more well adjusted human being. So take it all in stride friends. I agree with the post above that you can always learn patience from these situations. As for your opponent and his psychological problems, there's not much you're going to accomplish on a chess website to help the guy. He's going to have to do that work on his own.
I do not abandon any game If I can make a comeback and am confident that I can make a comeback but when I'm in a position where I can no longer make a comeback and thinks that any move will be pointless, that's when I resign. The point of resigning is acknowledging your opponent's move and decision-making moves. Abandoning the game or just letting the time run out is so pathetic and unsportsmanlike.
I've noticed that many of my opponents abandon the game when they suddenly get into a losing position (e.g. they blundered their queen). My question is what do players gain from abandoning the game instead of resigning? For me it seems that the only difference is that I have to wait a few seconds before playing the next game. If there's no benefit to abandoning the game, why not just resign? I'm going to assume that this happens less among higher rated players...
I have thought about this before, and they might just want you to resign to not waste time although you are winning to get the rating points
I have suggested multiple times to the site the following:
In these cases … If chess.com would incorporate and publish as part of each members profile… the members abandonment percentage based on games played and games abandoned…. The members can decide for themselves when the game begins…. Do I want to play this member or not?
seems to me this would be a simple solution.
If Im down...I now will still play awhile just to learn. If Im down to no pieces vs a piece or no queen...I resign. Its absurd to abandon.

fr fr its too pathetic of me to abandon the game, might as well just resign and consider my opponent's skills. And abandoning the game is disrespectful to the other player.
Chess.com should implement something to discourage players from abandoning games. Something like you lose 20% of the initial clock for your next 3 games.
It sucks being made to wait so long after the scum bags abandoning. They are lucky I'm not king of this site.
How do i even resign on my phone i don’t even know where the resign button is when i’m losing and wanna stop playing i press abandon where even is the resign button
Well as for me I have a simple rule: when I am in an obviously losing position against players from India I always let the clock run til the end. If I am losing against any other then obviously resign
It disgusts me how these peoples’ accounts are still open.
