Vacation abuse

Sort:
Apoapsis

I had a LONG vacation with my parents last year. (TWO WHOLE WEEKS) And limiting vacation would have made me lose games if I was on the site then. Frown

I had an opponent that played all the above tricks on me, before going on vacation, facing mate in one in our game.

However, I had a "Gambit variation" at my disposal:

1. I wrote an item in my blog (now deleted) telling my opponents I was going away for a while.

2 I then set my positions to "vacation".

3 Logged off.

4. Logged back on one hour later... and guess what? Yep! he'd played his final move.

**Addenda** He seemed a little annoyed that I refused his rematch challenge and sent him a lesson in etiquette at the same time. Oh! happy day! Wink

Good one Ray Brooks.

I've now got a similar problem. Two opponents playing one move every now and then in totally lost positions. Their names just get in the way. Maybe they could be hidden and an alert comes up when you've got a day left to make your move?

I got the answer!. Etienne's problem is that he has to keep checking on that person's game to see if they moved and he's not losing on time, right. But they only have one or two moves left which are forced.

The solution is to allow Etienne to make conditional moves (like in correspondence).  Then when they do move (at 4am in the morning), the preprogrammed move plays even though Etienne's not on line.

 I like that idea :). Pre-programmed moves.

I love it when I see my opponents both "on vaction" and "online now" at the same time.  I can wait as long as you want people.  It won't change the truth.
Patzer24
Yeah, just wait it out and they will eventually lose once their vacation time runs out. Chess players *should* have the patience for this.  Wink

It's not really about patience Matt, it's about disrespect for the opposition.

Etienne wrote: The player is using her vacation only so the time she has to play her move won't go down, but she goes out of vacation to play her other mvoes, then back to vacation again. She is only using it so her timer on my game will never go down until perhaps the 30 days (28 left I think) have gone down. I don't think vacations were meant to be used that way... as this is obviously the abuse of a feature.

i share the same frustration with you man. but i just let them do that. they did not calculate that if they lose now and win tom they will get a higher rating. its better than win games then lost as it may cause them higher minus on their ratings. and where here to play our first love, CHESS! everything including rating is of secondary importance.

I want to interject a comment about this vacation time.  If you change the rules about vacation, those who don't abuse the vacation time will suffer, I am talking about who  actually need it.  I think it is unneccessary to actually do a correction because they will use up their vacation time and it will self correct.

I usually play lots of games  so I don't pay any attention to vacation problem.

People are people anywhere. We should respect their weaknesses.

Why not identify such abusers? At least if they are identified many others can simply avoid playing with them. Soon, they would have none to play. Smile

we have some very good plans to deal with cheaters, bad behavers, etc. it will take a little while, but it will get implemented :)

Oh dear. Bad idea.

TheOldReb
Why is it a bad idea batgal?

this is an excellent site to play chess, analyze games, find other people with like-minded hobbies and ideas, express ourselves and interact through the forums with others from around the world. why,oh why are we getting so worked up over someone going on vacation-eventually their time will run out and they will be forced to finish the game. I don't know about the rest of you, but chess.com goes to the trouble of e-mailing me when an opponent has made a move and it is my turn. if there are cheaters out there(heAVEN FORBID) then let's let chess.com deal with them, not start pointing fingers at fellow players.Cool

"Why is it a bad idea batgal?"

Because every incident has two sides. Automatically assuming one's side is the only explanation and posting names of those we feel are abusing the system, even if we have good evidence and even if we're correct 99% of the time, leaves 1% falsely accused and their reputation permanently damaged.  Who wants to be the one to make such a blunder? Not I.

Regardless of what it is that is built, designed, invented... someone will always find a way to abuse it. Either because they are bored, just for the fun or it, or just because they can.

Some join chess sites, have loads of games started then don't bother coming back.. some do the same but use their vacation button..

I've been on the receiving end of someone abusing the vacation button.

Saying that, i do agree with batgirl ...

Not everyone abuses their vacation time.. some may have valid reasons for needing their entire vacation time all in one go.. [work, family bereavement, illness]

As an example, several  people in my area, went on holiday for a week and came home to find they had lost their homes to floods ... i imagine the last thing on their minds was making their move on chess games. So even though i strongly disagree with the abuse of the vacaton button and those that do it,

i can't tar everyone with the same brush..

I am not wanting to punish the innocent 1% either but does that mean the other 99% just gets a pass? If you apply this reasoning to the law we would have a real mess. Surprised

Bah I just joined today and am playing like my 6th game and am one move away fom checkmate and as soon as I move to get into position my opponent puts up the vaction status.

if anyone has ever played against me they know i use my vacation alot. its not because i am stalling for more time. the problem is that im in china and do a lot of traveling. most of the time i don't know if the next hotel i will stay in will have an internet connection so i use the vacation feature. i love this site because it has that. i know it can be frustrating to my opponets but i don't use this to "gain" an advantage i just don't want to lose games that are going good because some hotel can't keep up with the times and get internet access. i'm aware some abuse it but are they really worth the frustration? when someone is a sore loser trying helpless tricks it shouldn't bother anyone, you just have to recognize desperation.
