Nobody owns chess. You can play by any rules you like, as long as your opponent agrees to it.

No one can change a rule to classical chess, the rules are rules, people can make a variant taking away a rule. But classical chess will always be the same. As to who owns chess, no one knows. Chess went way back to far for anyone to remember, so no one really owns chess.

That (and quite a few other changes) happened in the 15th century, in the time of Columbus. And it took some time for people to start playing the new variant, but it eventually spread everywhere because it was a faster, more exciting, more fun game than the old one.

Chess is not a game that was invented in 2008 by some guy who now owns the copyright.
