He’s likelier than anybody, of course, but it’s not so simple as that. Two cycles back, people expected the same of Alekseeenko, and he (narrowly) avoided the cellar. A 2650 isn’t to easy to beat, and it’s not so hard for someone else to get frustrated and start playing badly.
Although Fabi seems to have the greatest chances this year, but my personal favourite is D. Gukesh. I think Gukesh will definitely win...

Nepo can't achieve that. Korchnoi was number 2 for a decade. Nepo was number 2 for a couple short periods of time.
It's easier for Nepo to become a world champion, right? Probably the weakest one, but there's no shame in that.

I agree. But I want a change in chess history. If Nepo wins his third Candidate, he qualify for the next Candidate.
Fabi or Hikaru. Hopefully that would be enough for Magnus to return.

The criteria for qualifying for the Candidates in 2026 has changed. The runner up in the World Championship in 2024 no longer has an automatic berth into the 2026 Candidates tournament.
