What will happen if chess got solved?

Then everyone would have infinite rating

True, but then what would happen to competitive chess? Will there be world champions anymore? Will every game played be a draw?

"what would happen to competitive chess?"
++ It would gradually die out, like competitive checkers.

"Will there be world champions anymore?" ++ Maybe for blitz only.
Carlsen already now refrains from the classical chess world championship and won world championship matches against Karjakin and Caruana by going into rapid tiebreakers.

"Will every game played be a draw?" ++ Not necessarily. Humans will have difficulty memorising the solution. Connect Four is strongly solved to be a draw, and the solution is easy to memorise, but it is still played casually and the first player does not always win, as he should.

I see. Thank you for your opinion.

Jokey

Hmm.

@5 four in a row isn't solved draw, it's always a guaranteed win for red (or the first player). Even if no one can memorize, the first player has a clear advantage that is way stronger than white in chess.

Jokey

Interesting.

No... for several reasons no.

First is that rating doesn't evaluate the quality of your moves, only the quality of your results. If everyone draws (for example) then all results are equivalent regardless of the strength of the moves.

Second is that rating scale and placement is arbitrary i.e. you can set the average at zero, or a billion, or in negative numbers. In other words assuming a large number for strong play is not necessarily correct.

But even if 1 and 2 were not true, the rating formula wouldn't output infinity for several reasons. The most fun one to point out is even with infinite wins, a rating doesn't diverge unless the opponent's ratings also diverge i.e. even without chess.coms rounding BS, you eventually stop gaining rating even if you keep beating much lower rated players.

No... for several reasons no... (I don't feel like writing multiple paragraphs explaining something that should be obvious).

But ok, it's possible... chess could also die out without that, so sure, it's possible.

Thank you for sharing your opinion.

Even if chess got solved, it would be hard for grandmasters to memorize all the moves to the solved positions. Some would make the opening slightly dubious to get others out of their prep.

True, but wouldn't the slightly dubious move be punished?

Jokey

Hmm.

"four in a row isn't solved draw, it's always a guaranteed win for red (or the first player)"
++ Nine Men's Morris is weakly solved to a draw. There used to be competitions, but no more.

@14

"wouldn't the slightly dubious move be punished?"
++ Of 20 legal first moves only one (1 g4?) loses by force and the other 19 draw just the same.
However, 1 e4 and 1 d4 make it harder for black to draw.

@13

"it would be hard for grandmasters to memorize all the moves"
++ It is not necessary to memorize all the moves. Just some general conclusions are enough.

Would be interesting to see the longest tablebase win

Interesting.
