The first edition was highly competitive, with people sacrificing everything to maximize their points (for example not sleeping).
These days it's meaningless, sure.
One annoying thing was chess.com didn't understand some of the obvious strategies such as playing simuls and that variants tend to have fewer moves per game. They had to change the rules mid-competition. It's really a shame they didn't involve anyone intelligent during the planning or test phases... but it made them money and that was their goal, so good job I guess.

I think before they used to give out premium membership, but now nothing happens, the Chess.com Legends Club is basically dead now.
