The USCF Norm-Based Title System:
1200 - Fourth Category
1400 - Third Category
1600 - Second Category
1800 - First Category
2000 - Candidate Master
2200 - Life Master
2400 - Life Senior Master
To earn the title, you must earn five norms, and for Candidate Master and above, have reached that rating threshold. To earn a norm, you must earn one more point at a tournament than would be expected for someone at that rating level. You must play at least four rounds (if three rounds, you need to win two more points than expected), and the tournament must be a regular (or dual-rated) time control. A higher norm counts for all lower norm categories.
You can access an excel spreadsheet that does all the math for you here: http://math.bu.edu/people/mg/ratings/normcalc.xls
The norm system is completely separate from the National Master and (Original) Life Master Titles that are earned by reaching 2200 and maintaining 2200+ for 300 games, respectively.
I started playing chess eight months ago and earned my first norm (Fourth Category) playing in the Sophomore Section of the Minnesota Open. I am halfway through a tournament at the Chess Castle here in Minneapolis this weekend, and it looks like I should earn a Second Category norm. Sure, the USCF lower norms and “titles” are nowhere near as impressive as a bona fide FIDE title, but I think the system is great for us mere mortals to have something to strive for, accomplish, and take pride in.
I'm playing a four round tournament with one game each Wednesday of this month. So far I have a win against an unrated and an 1800+ player. Am I still in the running for norms or did being paired against a unr. ruin it?
it doesnt ruin it, assuming that the event is all rated at the same time at the end. if each game is rated seperately each week, then no norms are possible

wow i only have 4th category even though rating is above 1600
One question, how do I earn a 4th category. My USCF rating is 1540. I played in a tournament during thanksgiving at Pennsylvania and I played 6 games and I had a total score of 4.5 . When I used the rating estimator, my performance was higher than expected for me. When you say 4th category - 1200, do you mean my current floor has to be 1200 (mine current floor is 1300) in order to get a norm or do you mean your rating has to be 1200+ ? Thanks!
you need the rating to be 1200+

You scored a 3rd category norm for that event and another 3rd category for your most recent event. You have two 4th category norms from two previous events as well. So you only need one more 4th category or higher norm to get the 4th Category title.
You can view your history from the More tab on your MSA page. There is a link to your Norms History there.
Only the Candidate Master, Life Master, Life Senior Master have rating requirements.

My computer doesn't have excel, so can someone who has it answer? I beat post events of 1592, 1833, 1884 and lost to 2030. Do I get category 1 norm?

No, you get a 2nd Category norm. If you would have won all your games, you would have, or if the average rating of your opponents had been a little higher.

:/ I only looked again after I saw the norms update. I was so disappointed especially 'cause I was 1500
A friend of mine wants to know more about USCF norms. I have never done the research despite being a USCF member for 10 years. Any ideas?
