Yeah that's mental, never would've found that
There was MATE IN 4??? Everyone would've missed it... (OTB Match, Round 3, Argyle Invitational)
Sorry, you should have found it. It is straight forward when you consider Qxf2+. This line reveals itself in a few moves. Should be able to calculate 3-4 moves at your level. With bishops on long diagonals, Q & R on f-file, plus N, need to closely look for attacking options. Bxf2+ does not have any follow-up and your line was definitely headed for a draw with opposite Bishops. White's pressure on g7 & Ne6 were definite distractions.
FYI--Qxf2+ leads to a queen sacrifice which you could have posted!! You will get it next time. Good luck in your match. Cheers

I can, and do calculate lines to that degree. However, it is rarely on my priority list to calculate lines where I sac my queen. It's a lot easier to find these lines when you say "there is M4 on the board" rather than in the game scenario, as I'm sure you know. From my perspective, the game was entirely balanced (which, other than this tactic, it was), and you don't look to sacrifice your queen when the position is equal. And, if the mate hadn't worked, taking with the queen would have been inferior positionally than taking with the bishop and would've led to a losing position...
For anyone still interested, the match continues... it is now 4.5/7 - 2.5/7 in my favour, but it can all change in the blink of an eye! (Just ask Ian Nepo...)
That´s a beautiful mate! And no, I´d never have found it in a game.
thank you! I didn't either so... XD
Yes I would have got it in a tournament game. It took two or three minutes just now and I'm out of practice. The fact that Qxf2 is so obvious means that you look at that right away and the position becomes clearer.
Qxf2 was definitely my instinct in the game, too. But I didn't see the mate so decided the bishop was better. I think there's a big difference when finding the best sequence between just having the position (which I knew from theory was roughly equal after 16 17 moves) and knowing that there's M4 to find, y'know what I mean?
the M4 wasn't too hard, I mean, I'm 900 and I got it
Yes, it's a bit easier when you know there's M4 on the board, I think. Rest assured, if my opponent played a Catalan against you at the level he is you would lose before that M4 was on the board
1700ish ECF here, knowing that there is a mate in 4 makes it easy to find.
Playing OTB, I would have probably missed it like you.
the third move is difficult to find, but the Q sacrifice is just crying to be played.
I agree, but it's not really the sort of sequence you play unless you've completely seen it from the outset - quite hard to recover from sacking your queen incorrectly!

If you had the eval bar and It showed M4, You would instantly put your attention on the variations after Qxf2+, same in that case.

Says you, you literally haven't played a single game on your account!
Hey all! Figured I'd share with you this Insane Mate in 4 sequence that I missed. I'm playing an OTB Match with my friend @Danbranch7. We are rated 1414 and 1512 over the board (ECF) and I'm obviously higher rated than that online. This game featured a Catalan (which we both know very well), and, after the game, while doing computer analysis I was shocked to see that I had missed M4 on the board. Let me know if you would've seen this, because I had looked for mates and failed to find it.... (The full game is featured at the bottom, the M4 is the puzzle)
For anyone interested, the score of our match is 1.5/3 each, with 11 games to play. I'll probably do a blog post about it at one point... Anyway, let me know below if you solved the puzzle (I can't imagine anyone did first try...)
