The main reason to decline rematches. FEAR

Sort:
chesstopcrown

Online chess loses its competitive edge when players decline rematches after winning. It’s even worse when their win comes from a time scramble or a mouse slip. Introducing a "Best of 3" format could fix this by encouraging more balanced and meaningful matches. One game rarely tells the full story. Let’s keep the competition alive!

The truth is, many players who refuse rematches after a lucky win are just cowards who won’t admit it. They hide behind excuses, but real competitors seek challenges, not easy exits. Chess should be about proving skill, not escaping after one game.

And before you comment the same tired excuses like “I don’t have time” or “I play for fun,” let’s be real, the main reason people decline rematches is fear. They’d rather keep an unearned win than risk losing a fair fight.

What if I just don’t want to play you again? Am I still a coward?

If you decline EVERY rematch, especially when you win by luck, yes.

What if I don't want to rematch with a valid reason? Am I still a coward?

You sound like a salty 700 who just created their account today...

Hyper-N0va
I don't accept rematch because I'm afraid that they might cheat because they got mad about losing.

If you actually had a valid reason, you wouldn't be responding to this post.

@chesstopcrown if I knew for sure my opponent was going to play fairly i’d have no problem rematching.

Why play online chess if you suspect everyone isn’t playing fair? If someone cheats repeatedly, wouldn’t chess.com ban their account for suspicious play? And wouldn’t you get your points back? Again, poor excuse.

Hyper-N0va
It's not a bad excuse. Chess.com has a horrible cheating problem, and I've witnessed a few of my friends lose to people cheating after doing a rematch. besides, I hardly ever get rematch requests; I can't even remember the last time I got one.
FoodRake7852
Maybe they decline rematches because the request is almost always an immediate butthurt reaction to losing. I see nothing in this rant that would suggest otherwise.
Francescos73

it's funny that I never get rematch requests after an unrated game. Those who ask rematch are often people who care about rating but not about chess

mynerisken

what if he fakes it and makes it look like a mouse slip? making a silly mistake on purpose and bill the loss to it and ask for rematch? maybe he already thinks he will lose it anyway..

win is a win afterall, even its a mouse slip, since the other player didnt make a mouse slip that also mean he is a better player, he must have developed some habits to prevent it maybe and dropped his chance of unexpected failures (he might be more experienced on accidents)

i rarely accept rematches, and almost never ask for it. I dont care about opponents ego and his thoughts on what justifies a win. I have my own agenda, if he cant handle a loss he can just tilt or quit or go whine about it.

HangingPiecesChomper

good thing I barely get asked for a rematch. the vast majority of my opponents don't want to play me again.

PlayerIDC

What if I'm not in a mood for a rematch? I just don't feel like doing a rematch or just want to play with a different opponent. That's a coward move? I don't know why it matters to you though and most people don't even offer rematches. Call them a coward too since they don't want a rematch.

If you think people are "afraid" of each other over a chess game, you are at a whole different level of delusional. Tell me you're mad because people don't accept your rematch offers without telling me.

I'm guessing you're the same guy who made a post exactly like this a month or two ago and got mad when people destroyed you with facts.

guy must be just reflecting, he is the one having fears in the back of his minds, assumes everyone feels the same.

it takes years to realize those kind of delusions, if not a whole lifetime.

Actually I decline rematches cause I don't care XD why would I be afraid of losing what's wrong with losing anyway lol if I start accepting rematches I get annoyed when everyone declines and I tend to get more salty when I lose its less stressful to not care about your opponent at all
