The subscription thing was in one of the Kickstarter comments a few months ago and then they walked it back. I'll try to find it later.
Square Off - Chess Set
Well, they sort of walked it back...
@Jeroen Lenaerts - Hi, we are working on the update and will post it soon. For Viktor, we do foresee the subscription to be FREE for a significant period of time, if not in perpetuity. We are looking into it and would definitely revaluate this again, before we start shipping. It is sad for us to see some backers go but rest assured that the product quality or production plan won't be hampered because of that. We try our best to do timely reply to all the comments from our backers whether it is on Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Thanks!
I haven't heard anything about that Dennis
Their Viktor AI may be subscription in the future.
what exactly is Victor AI what is it supposed to do. If I had known a subscription was going to be in play in the beginning I would never have bought a grand kingdom and waited nearly two years for two neos

TL; DR: play against AI, lessons and analysis may require a subscription after an unspecified time.
~~~
Square Off has been cagey about it. Originally, they announced that you'd be able to play online for free forever, but access to the AI(play against board), lessons and analysis would be behind a paywall.
They have backed down and have several conflicting communications, but the current understanding is that purchase of a board grants unlimited access to play against AI, lessons and analysis for a unspecified, lengthy time("lengthy time" is their word), then if you want to continue to access lessons, AI and analysis, you would have to pay a subscription. (it's also possible that play against AI will always be available, but lessons and analysis would be subscription)
Well considering you can use it to play via chess.com users and your game shows in chess.com game history you can just use this site to analyse the games after. I have no interest in using the board to play against an ai. I want to play vs Real people
Just support Open Source guys. Don't fall into the trap of buying a DGT or Certabo or Square Off and then regretting it. Check out my dilemma and resolution here.
Open source is great, but someone still needs to make the hardware.
I really enjoyed playing on my Square Off, and also enjoy playing with my DGT set.
Hi SquareOff enthusiasts,
I lost the lock screw and need to ship my set. Does anyone know if I can just buy a compatible screw from a hardware store that will fit? Or have another suggestion, like a small pin or dowel?
Hoping some of you have insights for me.
I don't see why a screw of the same diameter wouldn't work. Perhaps someone here can measure, or you can try a few different ones
I was able to find a screw that worked at the local hardware store, just FYI in case anyone else is in a similar situation. The employee brought it to me, I didn't get the size or anything, he just charged me $0.27.
imagine my anxiety when I bought my set second hand and the guy DIDN'T put the set screw back into place before shipping.. I didnt only pay less than $200 for it and it was like brand new so, the panic was short lived as it worked upon testing.. Never could get a good idea for how to go about making an alternative piece set though.
Hey guys, just wondering how long it took you to get your chess set from squareoff?
I placed my preorder on April 17, 2021 and I still don't have it.
The team at squareoff just keep giving me different dates!
Back in September they said the board had finally shipped, but no tracking, and since then there's been no update.
Each time I contact squareoff they give me a date 1-2 weeks later.
Their latest deadline was Nov 25,and that's passed, still nothing, no explanation either, because they claim the board is ready and shipped.
It was originally promised to be delivered by June 30, 2021, and I had meant to give it to my cousin as a birthday present
Edit: ah I went back and read the thread, I guess most of us are in the same boat. What a joke of a company
These square off sets are cool but really do u need a machine to move for you I mean If u play online and against cpu bots i do the same mostly at home just save alot of money and move the cpu or opponent pieces it saves alot of money lol I'm just more into classic wooden boards nice pieces no machine or gimmicks
That's true, I was buying mine as a gift to my cousin because he loves all things chess, and thought it would be fun to have something different.
I asked square for a refund though because I had no confidence that they would ever get me the board, they had pushed delivery back again to the middle of December! I was concerned that they wouldn't issue a refund either as two days had passed and no reply, but luckily they did.
This almost year long nightmare is over!
Yeah, they're pretty slow to respond to refund emails. I'm in the process of attempting a refund since their app (as nice as it seems to be) uses a constant 100% cpu which drains battery like crazy and causes the phone to get warm.
Just an FYI, if you buy any product on kickstarter or Indiegogo, which I am assuming you are discussing the NEO or Swap, you are part of a crowdfunding campaign. There is no guarantee you will get the product, let alone get the product on time.
Yikes!! Anyone else having problems with the smartphone besides lotsoblots?
Please write about it here if this is creating a problem for you? I can always cancel it I paid via PayPal. Actually, unless you did Kickstarter which has its own caveats it is not kosher to charge MC or VISA or AE or DISCOVER if the product is back-ordered. When you sign up to be a merchant they are very specific about that. I know I did it all a few years back for about 15 years. I do know any USA chess purveyor I have dealt with always waits till the shipment day to charge my account no matter what I use. Off the top alphabetically to show no favoritism American Chess Equipment, Chees4Less, Chess House, HOS/USCF/Wholesale Chess. Also overseas Official Staunton in the UK. Sorry if I left anyone out but I do not think I used any other companies in the last couple of years.
Hey thanks for the reply, no It was for the grand Kingdom set that I ordered straight from their website, not part of a crowd fund campaign, original delivery date was June 30th still didn't see it by my refund request
