this is all stupid but true Smurfs have plagued this game and I sometimes will get paired with mf that play like a 1500-2000 elo player in 500-1000 elo.
Smurfing is a legal thing here but why?
Im new to chess.com and im 1500, but my account elo is around 800, im not smurfing but each time i try to reach my actual elo i keep finding these smurf accounts, they play way too well for their elo ratings.
That is most definitely what is happening, yes.
I've been here for 9 years, and occasionally get accused of "smurfing" at the end of a 3-min. Blitz game (which is all I play). However, I still really don't understand what smurfing is. I read up a bit on it tonight and learned that basically it means an accuser thinks you are playing "too strong for your rating". Some beginning players do think like that, but if they stick around long enough they figure out that some players just have volatile ELOs. This is true of me. My Blitz rating here has ranged between 550 (lowest) and 1180 (highest), but now the range has "narrowed" to between 750 and 1100. So I suppose this could make me a "smurfing suspect" amongst some of the newer players, but of course I won't change the way I play just because someone doesn't like it that they lost a game.
Smurfing generally refers to someone playing outside their league.
For example, if you have a rating of 1180 and create a new account to start at 300, you are technically "smurfing." Similarly, if you intentionally drop your rating by losing many games, that's also considered smurfing.
The problem is this:
Imagine someone is genuinely trying their best to improve their rating—for instance, I might be aiming to reach 1000 while currently at 950. Then I get paired with someone who could actually be rated 1200, 1300, or higher, but they are now playing at my level of 950.
My level is 950, and I lose the game because I was outplayed by someone who, under fair conditions, shouldn’t even be competing with me.
This type of scenario has happened in real life. I believe it was Kasparov (though I might be mistaken) during a simul match where a participant claimed their Elo was 1900. The master, assuming that level of skill, played accordingly.
However, the player’s actual rating was 2300, which confused the master, leading to a loss or a draw. If the participant had stated their true rating at the beginning, the master would have adjusted their strategy appropriately.
At this point, someone might argue: "Just play chess. If you lost, it's your fault."
That's true to an extent. But imagine playing against a 3000-rated bot—you would never win. Is that entirely your fault? Partly, yes. But the game itself wouldn’t be "fair" or "even."
Why smurfing is allowed here?
Chess.com refus to do anything against smurf accounts with +90% win ration.
Time to time im stumble uppon players with tremendous wins and basicaly non lost games.
They usualy bellow elo 1000 or 1500 and playing against the low rated community.
Since they play unrated games they can keep their elo.
But what is their true elo?
I saw players with elo 600 and has several wins against 2100.
Why chess.com let players demolish low rated newbies?
They ruining the chess experience for thousands and thousands of players...
Who cares about unrated games?
Blundered something and lost the game.
Made mistakes and lost the game.
Outplayed and lost the game.
Smurfing starts here:
Seriosly outplayed and lost the game.
Destroyed. (You dont even know why you lost)
If you dont know why did you lost than your opponent was way stronger than it should be since you both playing in the same elo and the same knowladge +-200 elo
you can even use stockfish on them but its not recommended
Cheating is cheating
Unrated means your rateing will not move
But not means you can cheat. If you cheat rated or unrated you are just a ...
Why do you assume that if someone plays too good for his rating he must be smurfing. People sometimes do have moments when they play far better then their rating level. For example im 1700 and the engine says i sometimes plays like a 2300. So why cant a 900 play at the level of a 1300

When a 700 player finds a type of move only 1500+ see or combination only after X elo you learn thats sus.
It might just luck but still. If you analize 1000 games of 700 players and 1000 games of 2000 players and 1000 games of 700 elo plays against 2000 elo. You will find how do you spot sus moves and combinations.
