rematches????

What is up with the rematches? I always give one and never get one. I just played a guy who I gave a rematch and then he left the board when I requested one.

alak0926

It is just very poor conduct to not grant a rematch.

Pashak1989

yeah what a big deal

alak0926

yeah it is a big deal

It's a vanity thing, isn't it....I mean I understand it, and I feel frustrated too...and I usually give rematches but sometimes, I generally have to do something and can't....and you get guys b^^chin and moanin..but it really boils down to not being able to accept losing, in my own case too, in case you think I am getting at you, to being not as clever as we think we are and not liking it. If there is something I really need to get good at in chess, it is getting good at losing, and softening that sharp edge of narcissism!

It's your choice to always give a rematch, it's my choice to never give a rematch because I am never interested to play another game right away and I always take a break between the games.

ive discovered sometimes guys will magically play at GM strength after you beat them  as they have a vendetta and grudge against you. That's why I turn them down. Once burned and all that.

I've found that too...funny huh

It's definitely the right thing to allow a rematch if you beat someone but this is the internet so don't be put out if this is not reciprocated, particularly with live chess. I don't agree with the OP about permitting a rematch of a rematch. Allowing someone you beat a chance to redeem themselves is fine but beyond that there is no obligation and in fact it's probably time to move on.

Not accepting a rematch request shouldn't be interpreted as rude. Here are some possible reasons for not accepting rematches:
1. My internet connection is quite poor and I just lost the recent match on time because my moves didn't reach the server in time. So I'm not playing another match right now, I'll wait until the connection is good. (This is from my personal experience. I've been warned of fairness policy violation because my connection went bad and the server thought that I intentionally aborted the game)

2. There are millions of players on the site, I want to play a different one every time

3. Playing against the same opponent usually means playing against the same style. I want to play against different styles

4. Some players keep on asking rematches (no matter they win or lose). After 4-5 matches against the same opponent it becomes boring for some people.

5. I took out 10 minutes free time from my lunch hour to play a 5-minute each blitz. If I play one more match my boss will kill me.

6. My dinner's starting to get cold. I played the last half of the recent match in like 1 second per move and offered a draw on the position I should have won, why doesn't the opponent take a hint ?

There are still more. That much for now.

To be fair he could of had something to do. As an example tonight I played a guy and had a bad position all game but turned it around and won at the end. My wife was wanting to eat dinner just as the game was ending. So he sent a request for a rematch and I had to decline. So sometimes life happens.

This issue has been beaten to death so many times in the forums.  Also, as a mod, I've issued warnings to multiple people for leaving nasty comments on another member's page because the other guy didn't want a re-match.  In some cases, my warning was ignored and I had to mute somebody.

1. There is no legal, moral, ethical, "fair play", or "good sportsmanship" requirement to give a rematch.  You give a rematch if you want to, but any expectation that you should is totally unfounded.

2. There are many reasons to turn down a rematch.  Some have been mentioned in this thread already.

Can't believe how many people don't believe accepting a rematch is a matter of sportsmanship. Its just the way I was brought up.  if you beat someone and they ask you for another game you accept the offer unless you have a more pressing matter to deal with. And likewise if you're defeated. Its a sports thing that I learned from being raised in an athletics environment.  Chess nerds don't seem to  get it.

Search up "rematch" on the forum

I believe that if you have time, then it's polite to accept a rematch offer, but it's also polite to not make a big deal about it if someone declines your rematch offer.

Also, for a player of your level, you'd be better off analyzing the game than playing another one.

Cherub_Enjel

^He is not very good at chess...yet! I was at his level once, but didn't play game after game without studying my mistakes.

Give me an example of a sport where after one official game you can ask for another one at your will.

Only "chess nerds" want a rematch, alak0926.
Erik_02

Players that whine about rematches are the second dumbest people on these forums. The dumbest being the 1200 patzers that think everyone that beats them is an engine lol.

Slow_pawn

I lost a game once to a guy whose handle was idontrematch. It was kinda funny. Why wouldn't someone want a rematch at least sometimes.  I mean no disrespect to the OP and his opinions, but I think it's just not something I would sweat over. I've seen this topic in the forums before and always wondered why anyone would get annoyed at all. I mean, sometimes I just have to get going.

alak0926

Still can't believe how defensive chess nerds get about their reluctance to accept rematches.   Its just plain bad form.  Chess may not be a sport but basic sportsmanship should prevail in any venue.  Come on guys, give the guy you just beat a second chance if he asks and if you don't have a more pressing matter to tend to. Have some class.
