Rematches

I often play Blitz chess that comes down to the wire, with often the result coming in the last 10 seconds. Generally in these scenarios I win, but sometimes I lose, and I ask for a rematch, which the opponent blatantly refuses. Is this normal?

If it is a good game - ie close and well played - i will typically take the rematch….but sometimes i can’t as life is calling. It maybe a case of a sore loser, or it could be a crying baby, dinner is ready, or time to go to work. You never know what is going on, on the other side of the screen.

Sometimes they just wish to play new opponents regardless of the result.

If the wife calls....the wife calls buddy. 👍

Why does it matter if you play Anonymous Player1 or Anonymous Player2 if both are the same rating range?

Dancing with all the girls on the dancefloor is so much more fun then dancing with the same girl over and over again. Eventually she will start nagging and demand you change somehow.

You have to understand that these are mostly physically uncoordinated nerds that have no sense of competition. They want to do their same lame openings and memoized lines continuously, and if they rematch you, they won't be able to do that. They can be sniveling cowards because it's an anonymous setting. If this were face-to-face and he refused a rematch after my close loss, I'd call him a coward and flip the board, and maybe slap him.

There's no obligation to rematch, but it's considered proper etiquette in chess. Mainly each player should have a chance to play white since white has the advantage.

I understand sometimes people don't have the time, but I rarely get a rematch when playing a 3 min game. Maybe 1 in 20. I think people just don't have manners online. Over the board, people give each other more respect. Online, people think it's ok to be rude because they're hiding behind a username.

I can’t stand it. But not as much as when I give two rematches then make a small mistake and request a rematch and get denied. It’s almost never that the player isn’t available, 9.5 out of 10 times I find them playing a new game. So I stopped giving more than one rematch. It’s bad sportsmanship and most ppl here care about their raising so much that the quality just goes to crap. Not to mention games where the opponent pauses for a long time then plays like grandmaster. Some ppl just want to win and run. You just have to learn to not let it get to you.

sorry, but people who use the engine at ~1200 level aren't even good at cheating, so I think you're overthinking things. Have you checked those games with the engine? Are those moves normal moves in the position? Most people can't be bothered, really, to start an engine mid-game.

I mean, you only play blitz and bullet so it's a very short time control.

I refuse rematches as a matter of principle, win or lose. In life, I generally dislike hyper-competitive people, and those who lose and want rematches are generally these kinds of people (not always, just usually). I'm sorry if you feel the need to avenge your loss, but it's not my job to oblige and if you rage because you lose, well, all the better because I find those kinds of people annoying. And if you're wondering about those cases where the person just makes a mouse-slip and wants a rematch, if it's obvious, I just offer draws and move on.

TimothyShaun

In general, I decline rematches. Since I play games 30 0 and longer, I usually want to take a break before another game.

technical_knockout

very normal... sometimes i'm in the mood for a series of games, but usually not.

i refuse rematches all the time for a multitude of reasons, none of which include me being a poor sport or wanting to feel superior to my opponent:

working on passports... doing chores... breakfast... lunch... dinner... bath... work... bed... analyzing... already playing... low battery... doorbell... cat threw up... et cetera, et cetera... ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

its just life sometimes people savor the moments and sometimes you kill them with blood

This person here is the reason I don't ever accept rematches.

Mad because bad + ratio + cope + mald

I don’t like rematches here because a lot of the time it’s feels like revenge and seems to make it personal while I might be playing in a calm and clear “zone”, for five or ten games with random opponents. This is my preference, with a few exceptions, like I make a quick checkmate then yes, but most of the time no.

Also, a lot of close games that go down to the last seconds are too tense for me, my heart is pounding and neck muscles all stiff, ok if you are young, I guess.
