Promoting other variants?

So, I was scrolling through the forums searching for the longest defense/opening. I found a post called 'This is the longest defense' (or something like that). I opened the post, read the post, and scrolled through the comments. But then I found this comment in the middle of all the other comments saying:

"Thats why you should play chess 960 you don't have to memorize any openings"

The post or any of the comments, for that matter, didn't have any relation to Chess960 or any other chess variant, everybody was talking about normal chess. 

Is promoting other variants like Chess960 allowed?

Why not? It's a variant played on site. It may have been a little off topic for that particular topic but nothing too drastic.
