OTB Tournament Help

My dad said he'd allow me to go to a tournament but he said if I win I HAVE TO GIVE HIM THE PRIZE FUND because he's paying for it.

So I wanna scam him into thinking I lost when I actually won so I can collect the prize fund secretly. I'm really underrated so I have a really good chance at it.

But what actually happens when you win a prize fund? Do you just collect it from the arbiter after the game? Or is there a whole ceremony I have to sneak off to?

Why would you have to give him the entire prize shouldn’t you just have to pay him back for the entry fee?
chesssblackbelt

Because he has to pay for the hotel ig

I mean if you’re just paying him back for what he paid for the tournament that makes sense if he wants you to give him all the prize money, even more than he paid that’s not fair

That's what my parents do lmao, just don't worry about money ig, I don't win money much more than I win money anyways so

It doesn't matter I'm gonna steal it anyway. So how do you collect the prize fund? Can I do it without him noticing?

I’d assume if it was like a big tournament there would be some kind of ceremony but idk

You've won prize funds before, do you know what happens? I'm really hoping it's just a guy in a room who gives me cash

chesssblackbelt

Idk how I can go to a ceremony without him noticing. Maybe if I say there's an extra game and I don't want him watching it because he distracts me or smth

Im from US so idk how it works in UK, but normally you just go to like the TD room and they give you a check or cash or mobile payment. If its like a really big prize, you might have to fill out tax forms lol.

Best just tell your parents tho

chesssblackbelt

I don't think we have tax forms in UK so this sounds good actually. I'm gonna do it lmao

I'm gonna pretend to be so sad after every game I win 💀

Do you think this would work if there's a ceremony?

The plan is getting a bit elaborate idk

Jenium

There is a ceremony. Results are also shown online in official tornaments.

chesssblackbelt

Bleh idek why he's coming along. I know how trains and hotels work

He doesn't know anything about chess, he won't know where to look

KieferSmith

if you won the games, you deserve the prize.

I would say no, but I hope it's just immaturity and youthful arrogance that fuels your choices along these lines. He doesn't have to subsidize your entitlement delusions; having the privilege of attending OTB tournaments without being required to pay back the expenses if you loose should be reason enough to have some perspective on this. (assuming that's his position based on the context here) Your learning at this stage shouldn't be how to bite the hand that feeds you, but to extract the maximum experience value attending live events without the stress of the economics of it all. Unless you win so often and so much over time that there is a net profit after all expenses, he will still be in the hole as a result of your participation. Minimizing the amount of money he looses isn't an unfair arrangement while you aren't financing yourself. If and when you work and fund your own tournament fees, travel etc. then you are more than entitled to keep the prize money... that's fair.
